Swami Prakashanand and the Sins of Society

Swami Prakashanand who is the founder of Barsana Dham temple, near Austin Texas was indicted in April 2008 for child molestation. After three years the trial finally took place in March of 2011. A jury of 12 men and women took two hours to find Swami Ji guilty of 20 count of child molestation.

The charges were based on allegations of two women, Shyama Rose and Vesla Tonnessen Kazimer, now 30 and 27 years old, respectively, whose families lived at the 200-acre ashram in Driftwood.  They said the guru kissed and fondled them on numerous occasions over the course of several years, beginning when they were as young as 12. A third woman, Kate Tonnessen, now 31, also claimed the holy man had kissed and groped her during the same period. Each of the charge carries a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison.

Swami Prakashanda is known to his followers as Shri Swami jee. His guru is Jagat Guru Kripalu (JKP) Maharaj. (1)

It is difficult for this author to know the truth as it is known only to the accuser, the accused and God. Therefore it is impossible for this author to decide whether respected Swami ji is guilty or not. In this essay we will explore the issues surrounding the case.

The U.S. authorities are quite serious in prosecuting adults who engage in sexual acts with minors. They enforce the law to the fullest extent which is commendable.  In the past few years and decades, many priests belonging to the Roman Catholic Church have been prosecuted and sent to jail for lengthy periods for committing sex crimes with minors. (2)

Punishing the guilty is an important aspect of maintaining law and order but would it not be better if we could eliminate the source of the crime itself? Is it not true that the media in the U.S. is saturated with sex talk? Almost every TV program especially the popular talk shows has sex talk. Just yesterday and today this author watched a few TV programs including Two and a Half Men and the conversations between the actors invariably had sex in them. It is a well known fact that sex is used by the media to attract or hold viewers attention. The most popular video website YouTube owned by Google is full of videos that have sexual content.

When the kids and adults alike have such easy access to porn via the Internet is it surprising that the minds of people are full of sexual ideas. The moral fabric of society is being destroyed. Even though on our currency, we read “In God We Trust”, the schools in the U.S. are turning the students into atheists. The majority of those graduating from high schools have little regard for or faith in God. The reason is that the schools emphasize the teaching of math, natural science, English, social sciences and the sports, while completely ignoring the teaching of spiritual and religious values. The excuse given is that the secular nature of curriculum prevent the schools from teaching any one religion. The teaching of religion is left to the churches, temples and mosques who do not even agree on basic concepts like the nature of God and the definition of spirituality.  Can we not ask the schools to teach religion and spirituality and their role in the life of man, without mentioning the teachings of any one particular religion?

If the authorities and people make efforts and eliminate porn from the Internet, it would go a long way towards strengthening the moral fabric of society. The media has a great role to play in this but the government has to force the media to eliminate immoral themes and sex talk from their programs and publications. But the government will not do this unless the people rise up and demand such a course of action from the politicians they elect and who have the power to pass the necessary laws.

Prakashanand and the segregation of the sexes

The Barsana Dham temple near Austin, Texas was founded by Swami Prakashanand who turned it into one of largest and most successful of the Hindu temples in the U.S. This temple adored Srimati Radha Ranee, the consort of Lord Krishna. This adoration of Srimati Radha Ranee earned this temple many women followers. In fact many of the eloquent preachers from this temple were women.  It seems that Swami Prakashanand was surrounded by women devotees.

One important teaching of the Hindu religion is to prohibit excessive intermingling between men and women. This teaching applies most forcefully to those who call themselves the teachers of the Hindu religion. For example about Lord Chaitanya, who was a great saint of the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism, the following has been said.

Chaitanya was extremely dispassionate. He abandoned all sorts of sensual pleasures as poison. He was very strict in observing the rules of Sanyasa. He declined to grant an interview to Raja Pratap Rudra of Orissa, because it is a great sin for a Sanyasin to see a king. It is as sinful as looking at a woman. If a Sanyasin sees a Raja or a king, gradually he will be attached to the Raja. As the mind has the habit of imitating, the Sanyasin also will begin to lead a life of luxury and have a downfall eventually. That is the reason why a Sanyasin is prohibited from seeing a Raja. Gauranga never saw a woman in the face. He did not allow any woman to approach him. He slept on the ground with bare body.” (3)

It is not too difficult to understand why Lord Chaitanya considered it a sin to look at women or to meet with kings. Man and woman are like wood and fire. If you bring wood closer to fire, the result will be the burning of the wood. This is why all religions emphasize modesty and for preservation of purity and character, they prohibit excessive intermingling between men and women. Islam is most strict in this regard and this author finds great merit in this attitude of Islam. In fact Lord Buddha taught also that man and woman must be careful not to intermingle too much. The following quotations from Swami Vivekananda about the duties towards wife and duties towards husband are worth noting.

Swami Vivekananda on Duties towards One’s Wife:
No man should scold his wife, and he must always maintain her as if she were his own mother. And even when he is in the greatest difficulties and troubles, he must not show anger to his wife. He who thinks of another woman, besides his wife, if he touches her even with his mind, that man goes to dark hell. Before women he must not talk improper language, and never brag of his powers. He must not say, “I have done this, and I have done that.” The householder must always please his wife with money, clothes, love, faith, and words like nectar, and never do anything to disturb her. The man who has succeeded in getting the love of a chaste wife has succeeded in his religion and has all the virtues.” (4)

Swami Vivekananda on Duties towards One’s Husband:
Chastity is the first virtue in man or woman, and the man, who, however he may be strayed away, cannot be brought to the right path by a gently and loving and chaste wife is indeed very rare. The world is not yet as bad as that. We hear much about brutal husbands all over the world and about the impurity of man. But is it not true that there are quite as many brutal and impure women? If this was not the case, I am perfectly satisfied that there would not be one impure man in the world. What brutality is there which purity and chastity cannot conquer? “(5)

So, in my opinion, Hindu religious teachers should appreciate the great dangers of developing intimacy with people of opposite sex and should exercise extreme caution when dealing with members of opposite sex, especially when the latter are minors.  In fact this author likes the fact that most Hindu priests are married. Marriage is not sinful. What is most sinful is to claim to be a sanyasi (i.e. ascetic) and engage in sexual relations with anyone. Divorce is not sinful. What is sinful is to remain married and engage in extra-marital relations.

Post Script (inserted as sent in comment section by the author on 22nd March 2011)

I am the author of the essay “Swami Prakashanand and the sins of society” published above. I am very much confused by the comments of the readers. I am not sure if Swamiji is guilty or not. Hindu religion has many enemies and our enemies may be trying to discredit and malign our gurus in order to destroy us. It is also possible that Swamiji made a mistake and got carried away. This is why I wrote that religious teachers must be aware of the great dangers of excessive intermingling with people of opposite gender. Any man can get carried away if he is in regular contact with beautiful women or girls. But this does not mean that Swamiji is guilty. It could all be a setup.

I personally was victim of brainwashing and I know its great dangers. Brainwashing is carried out by religious and political organizations. I wrote an essay about brainwashing that you can read at the following link:

http://www.myads.org/journal/bkn21.shtml

Some people oppose organized religion. One Indian doctor is very active in opposing Hindu religion. He probably got promoted and rewarded for opposing his own religion and race.

i have lived for many years in different parts of the world, and i have seen the mentality of these people.

you seems to be very knowledgable about swami prakashananda jee, would you please also give the stastics that how many christian priests of that level has been booked under the law.

right or wrong, it would be nice to know

you are a writer under the ignorance about the western media. do you know, what swami kripalu has given to the hindu world,

we are less then insects, in front of these saints.

please tell , as i myself is searching one such guru.

those hindus , who are so much involved in defaming some hindu saints, i have only one question from them, please write how many people they are able to divert towwards the god.

if they has worked even 1% in service of hinduism , then even the murder of a brahamin is excusable by such kind of saints, what to talk of a few rapes of few imaginative girls.

please tell me if i am right or wrong.

I am not surprised at all. A few years back Prakashananda’s alleged guru, Kripalu Maharaj who has an ashram in Mussoorie and another sprawling facility near Vrindavan was in the news after being arrested by the police in some western country (perhaps in West Indies) for attempting to molest some young female devotees. He gave out his name as some Tiwari but I could recognize the photograph.
Such gurus are a disgrace to Hinduism but they still manage to attract devotees in large numbers.

it would be interesting to know about the names of some clean gurus , as much advance as him in bhakti.

because nothing has been prooved in india and abroad they knows how to throw the indian gurus out, if they do not agree to them.

Try falling madly in love with the lord.. imagining how u would like u see him.. and god will come to u in tht form…

        (2) tryin to do a research on such issues only gets one more in mud… i have studied alot of great philosophers, one id mention “Martin Heidegger”… he was known for the knmowledge he had… and he is pretty much known as one of those who actualy did deep thinkin… he question of the being and time was a very simple thing he wanted to prove and show however to explain it he went thru various ways that somehow also complicated the mind…when he lived… everyone around him found him crazy and he was blamed alot for betrayal and so on… however as u go reseachin on him more and more.. all u get is more and more confusion… when things relating spirituality is at concern… i think the best media to judge is ur inner self “ur heart” wea deep inside he knows wat is right and what is wrong…

howevr judging any guru.. whom u hav not felt or met.. gives no reason to speak against him.. even thou u have other aligations against him…

to judge a person we frst have to know the person personaly and then decide wat is right or wrong

        (3) a fake guru is he who does not clarify wat he preaches… who doesnt know himself wat he speaks abt… iv heard Kripalujis speeches… and i have not heard or seen anyone who could make me understand the lord or my purpose of being any better..

Hello, Thank you for your article. I could write a very long email comment, since I know Prakashanand Saraswati very well — as well as his guru, Kripalu Maharaj (aka Ram Tripathi). But I will simple say that, in my experience (16 years in JKP), they are both highly skilled con men who prey on spiritual people. They use Hinduism to hide behind and gain what they are truly after — money and sex. Plain and simple. They are not respected holy men — FAR from it.
I have started a Facebook page to document the long history of corruption of these men and others in JKP — and the efforts some people have made to expose this organization (Jagadguru Kripalu Maharaj) and its leaders over the years.
For more information and insight, please go to Facebook and visit the page called: The Truth Project for Barsana Dham and JKP
You may also contact me directly with any questions. My only goal in The Truth Project is to keep other people from wasting their life, time, money, and spiritual innocence in JKP.

I thank all respondent to this talk about the alleged allegations by the western govt and media and so many Indian authorities.

Now a days, it is not easy to work in India or abroad without getting spots , as if you want to clean , there are chances that you get some spots on yourself also.

There is always two sides of every thing. But it would be nice to know, from the knowledgable respondents that :

Are there any spotless gurus in India of the level of kripalu jee. It would be nice to know of the names. To day I met one very innocent devotee , in view of whom, any body living in comforts should not be considered as spiritual, according to the Indian old thought.

It would be even bigger thing to know that , if ever , any Christian or muslim priest of the level of kripalu jee , has ever been tried in court as kripalu jee maharaj .

Usa never spared any big hindu gurus, take the example of swami Vivekananda, swami prabhupad of isckon, osho , Mahesh yogi, satya sai baba, ramdev.

What about the teachings of kripalu jee maharaj, are they wrong. In my view, I do not know what others knows behind the curtain, but he has proved , in black and white, that bhakti is the top most in the Hinduism, other then any rituals.

No other guru or shankaracharya is as knowledgable as him about hindu scriptures.

The writers in these column should also write the names of their gurus , who I think should be spotless.

My guru is yugpurush mahamandleshwar shree parmananda jee maharaj of akhand ashram, haridwar. Muslims normally stage protest, when ever he or his devotee sadhwi ritambhara goes to usa.

I wish a precise discussion about the hindu saints, and not just what is reported by some vested interests, which is called yellow journalism, in India and abroad. Do not forget, many people accuse mahatma Gandhi as a woomaniser and pervert by Indians and western press. And Krishna himself comes in the same category by a lot of hindus,

Ashok — It’s funny you would say that — since you are verbally supporting Kripalu and his organization. (And for the record, it was Prakashanand Saraswait who had a trial).

The fact that I was fooled for 16 years proves how corrupt they are — and how devotional I was to God. Yes, I though the scriptures were beautiful too — however, Kripalu and everyone under him were using them to get money from people (he preached all of our money was his anyway so just give it to him) — and to lure women and girls into the bedroom — for “gopi bhoa” (he said he was Krishna and his chosen women and girls were his gopis.) Each person was told either — do not tell anyone, or you’ll receive a curse OR you will lose the devotional grace.

How could I have known with such a well-oiled, corrupt system in place running with the knowledge of all the people in orange and the so-called “graced” women and girls not telling their secrets?

I only sang bhajans in the temples, read the scriptures, and did physical seva — are you saying my attempts to be a good and pure Hindu are stupid???

Please tell us your real name, the years that you were associated with Barsana Dham etc. so that I can contact Barsana Dham and verify that you were indeed with them. It is very easy to create a fake profile on Facebook and pretend to be someone that one is not.

It is possible that you were with Barsana Dham and left after a few years. It was your choice to join them and it was your choice to leave them. You talk about brainwashing. The Christian religion is the most intolerant religion. I got lots of trouble at one bank in USA because my boss was an Egyptian Muslem. He hated that I was studying Swami Vivekananda. So, he gave me hassle. I just told one white lady that my friend in Canada would like to talk to her and she complained to her boss and he scolded me and threatened me with dismissal from work.

Then at one company in USA my boss was a dirty, lying Roam Catholic Nigerian. He hated the fact that I wrote on blogs in defense of Hinduism and he kept me down for ten years. He hired an Indian lady just because she was Roam Catholic. This is what they do in America.

And this is what most irritates the Xtians and the authorities in the US. The whites dominate the government , the courts and the armed forces in the USA. They hate anyone who converts white people. Even if our swamis have done some wrong it is very small compared to the towering crimes committed by whites against the Native people of AMerica, against the Black slaves brought here from Africa.

I don’t take much interest in gurus as I prefer to understand things by myself. However I myself am trying to trace out this guru which I saw on TV a couple of months back. He was orating in English and is probably a South Indian. He was speaking to the audience “… the thought comes and the thought goes, I remain the same ….”. I was stunned, I waited for long to see his identity appear on the screen but no use.
But I am of the opinion that guru is not essential for attaining realisation. Also instead of waisting time searching gurus, it is better to read the scriptures and get enlightened on your own. Nothing better than this.

The US authorities tolerate the ever growing porn in the media. But when a revered swami fondles a girl (which may not be true) he is sent to jail for 280 years. This is travesty of justice. This is disproportionate punishment for a crime. Punishment here does not fit the crime.

The Christians in the US are attacking Hindus and want to destroy us. By portraying our gurus as sex hungry their aim is to keep US Chrisitan, just as earlier their aim was to keep US and Canada white.

My boss in the US was a Nigerian Roman Catholic. He kept me down for ten years because I used to write blogs praising Hinduism. Finally in frustration I quit my job. These recently converted Christians are the worst.

In the Middle East Hindus are discriminated by Muslims and in the US and Canada by the Christians.

I assure you that “Swami” Prakashanand Saraswati was not persecuted in the U.S. because he was a Hindu. He was arrested, tried, and convicted because he was guilty of the U.S. criminal crime of “indecency with children for sexual contact.” He was charged with 20 counts — and could have been charged with more, since more occurred. Each count carries a penalty of two to 20 years. He got 14 years for each.

It’s so easy to say “he was framed because he was a HIndu.” He had a fair trial and the jury of his peers found the witnesses stories to be true and his defense to be full of lies.

Why don’t you spend some time calling out the “swamis” and “gurus” who are abusing the label of “Hinduism” to commit all manner of fraud, abuse, corruption, and money and sex crimes? THAT would be useful for society. Help people identify the frauds from the true teachers BEFORE people get hurt.

That is why I’m dedicated to exposing Prakashanand and his guru Kripalu — so the world at least has a chance to steer clear of these two con men, who are using “Hinduism” in a very egregious manner. I know these men better than most people and it’s an insult to humanity and to God that anyone would defend them.

Missing guru believed to be in Mexico

By Isadora Vail | Tuesday, March 22, 2011, 06:38 PM

A religious guru who fled Hays County after being convicted of more than 20 counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact, is believed to be hiding in Mexico with the aid of his followers, U.S. Marshal Hector Gomez said Tuesday.

Gomez said 82-year-old Prakashanand Saraswati, also known as Shree Swamiji, fled March 6 and probably crossed through the border city of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. He was later sentenced to 14 years in prison for each of 20 counts of molesting two girls who grew up at the Barsana Dham ashram in Driftwood.

Officials believe he is either still in Nuevo Laredo or Monterrey. Gomez said Prakashanand is probably trying to solicit a pilot that would fly him from Mexico to India, but Gomez says that could be difficult without Prakashanand’s passport, which was seized by the court.

“There are people that we’ve talked to who are devoted followers of his and they will sacrifice criminal charges and prosecution to help his flight,” Gomez said. “Another challenge for us is the financial support that his followers are providing him.”

The biggest challenge, he said, is capturing Prakashanand before he enters his native country of India, where his extradition back to the United States may not be granted.

  10. Pramod Kushwaha said

This is verified from my own life experience.

Actually you are the real loser. I have the guts to tell the world the truth about how the Whites and the Christians discriminated against me so others are not in illusion about the Christians in USA. Is it not true that African Americans have been discriminated in USA for centuries. Is it not true that the Islam has killed and maimed millions all over the world. If a person who has been victimized by these people complains would you call him a loser, and add “it is just a thought”.

You were with Barsana Dham for 16 years. It was your choice. You complain that they brainwashed you. All religious groups brainwash people. You left and now you have launched a campaign to defame Swamis at Barsana Dham. The only reason you are doing this is because you know that the authorities do not like people like Prakashanand who convert people into Hinduism. So you become brave because you know the rulers in USA are with you.

Here’s a line everyone might enjoy that came straight from Kripalu’s mouth in 2007 at Barsana Dham USA: “A guru’s actions might look worse than the most worldly person’s actions, but you can’t judge them because you are just a worldly person and the guru is divine.”

    Mr. Ved
I like your spirit. And do support you because you support Hinduism. But I don’t support your support for guru. Hinduism does put guru in high esteem but a guru is not above God. In fact the type of attachment you seem to show to Kripalu ji Maharaj is against the Hindu preachings. Hinduism advises attachment only towards God and no one else. Most of your arguments are result of attachment to this particular sect. The attachment is the cause all the suffering, I don’t know how come you haven’t realised this basic teaching of Hinduism. You must be on the side of Sanatan Dharma and God only and all the personal attachments must be given be up be it Swami Prakshananda or anyone else. I again repeat Swami Prakshananda is not Hinduism. Hinduism is a divine path for everyone, the path narrated by God himself. By taking sides to a person or guru you are insulting God. Instead of getting in arguments favouring the alleged guru you must cooly wait and see if he comes out of these allegations. Hnduism is a great science and art of living (i am not quoting ravi shankar) you must rather adopt the correct style of Hinduism rather than adopting and patronising gurus. Gurus are good but not indispensable. And you must get dispensed with them if you can because the soul itself is detached and single and no power in the world can make it related or attched to anyone one except God.

You say you do not support “my support for gurus”. I do not support all gurus, and I understand that some gurus are corrupt. But when you live in a country like the US where Hindus are a minority and when you have been a victim of racial discrimination by the Whites and Christians and Muslims, you understand that prosecution of Swami Prakashanand is politically motivated. They are upset that he wrote a book exposing Christianity, that he succeeded in converting Whites to Hinduism.

I have talked to many Hindus who lives in the US and they all say that the charges against this Swami are not true, they are politically motivated to destroy his temple and to stop his work of converting Christians into Hinduism.

They can not openly say that his work of conversion is wrong. So, they had to organize these charges.

The world is not as simple as it appears to you.

My remarks on Swami Kripalu Maharaj should be seen in the context they were made in. Someone claimed that westerners doing this to malign him. To which I said that he has been dogged by similar controversies in India for several decades.

Whether these charges are all false, partially true or completely true – I cannot say.

However, I do believe for sure that in the west, any popular Hindu preacher runs the risk of being charged with these kind of things falsely through Church machinations. In fact, even in India, the church has been involved in many similar cases in recent years. Even 20 years ago, some nuns were found dead in Mumbai and the Christian community alleged that they were raped and killed (read: by Hindus)> A post-mortem report revealed that the nuns were used to habitual sex, and that it was not necessarily a murder. Then in Orissa, after the Graham Staines episode, a nun claimed to have been raped by some Hindu men but a medical examination showed that this was not the case.

This is how spies and saboteurs operate. They start rumors without any proof, like “I heard that so and so gave $200,000 bribe to the magistrate to gain freedom for his leader.” This is typical of saboteurs. They make statements without any foundation and without any material basis.

      • Rishika said

How is it possible to have proof with an organization that deals in back-door deals, black money, and secrets?

I was told directly by a devotee who talked to Barsana Dham former security guard Peter Mellody (hiding out in India for three years, because he “knows to much,” according to himself), that Prakash took a pile of money and checks to Trinidad to pay off key people. Prakash also called a meeting of his “wealthy” devotees in his room and said, “I need money, because Maharaji is too old to sit through a trial.” Shortly after that, Prakash returned from a secret trip to Trinidad just before Kripalu’s hearing — and he was very jovial and proud of himself. Clearly, because he knew he got Kripalu off the very serious rape charges. And what do you know, a few days later, the prosecutors dropped the case. Later, it was revealed secretly to me that the dollar figure Prakash needed to pay everyone off was $300,000. (Later it was revealed that everything the woman who was raped claimed is exactly the stuff Kripalu does to willing sex partners (and presumably unwilling ones — like spraying perfume on them). One present Barsana Dham resident devotee told me so herself.)

I know you despise the truth surrounding this organization Ved. So what is the deal: Do you think there is no corrupt Hindu organizations or do you just have a fondness for this one?

    • VED said

It is very hard to believe that a 82 year old saint will be so foolish so as to try to rape a young woman whom he is meeting for the first time, and that too in a temple. Also the saint is so much advanced that he has memorized all the verses from Hindu scriptures. If he is so religious that he has memrorized these verses and he speaks so eloquently on TV that so many readers have been impressed by his sermons and have spoken to me highly of him, to think that he can not even control his sexual desires… it is ludicrous. This is nothing but a conspiracy by the enemies of Hinduism. It is part of religious warfare to stop the spread of Hinduism in the world.
Hindus should take lesson from this and we should double or triple our efforts to spread Sanatan Dharma in the world.

Read below what notes writer, Khuswant Singh, wrote about this, in August 2007, in Hindustan Times:

      http://www.hindustantimes.com/A-Joker-President-for-laughs/Article1-240432.aspx

Spitting abuse on a celebrity is bad enough; casting aspersions at his or her character is even more effective way belittling them, because even after it has been proven to be false and malicious, some of the mud sticks on the target.

Recently I came across an instance of this form of blackmail. The victim was Kripaluji Maharaj, who was, a few months ago anointed as Jagatguru — a world teacher — at an enclave in Varanasi. I have never met him; only seen and heard him on TV.

He is a saintly, scholarly person with a phenomenal memory and quotes chapter and verse from Hindu sacred scriptures without a scrap of paper in his hand. He has a way with words and holds his audience spellbound. He has a larger following in India and among overseas Hindus. He is 85 and not in very good health.

Last month he was in Tobago and Trinidad. Hindus in that country are politically divided into two: earlier settlers and the Indian-born. Kripaluji was a guest of the latter but just about every Indian came to attend his satsang lecturers on the vedas.

This eroded the following of old settlers, and their leader was not happy to see his following dwindle. He arranged for Guyanese girl to visit Kripaluji after he had delivered a two-hour pravachan on the sacred texts. At no time of the day or night he was left alone; there were always some followers to look after him.

However, this girl lodged a complaint that she had been molested and raped by him. He was arrested at midnight and released on bail the next morning. When the trial came up for hearing, there was no witness to support the girl’s allegation. The prosecuting counsel realised she had been used to malign Kripaluji and withdrew all charges against him. Kripaluji was honourably acquitted. The entire congregation pleaded with him to forgive them for the humiliation he had suffered. He forgave everyone concerned. Far from damaging his reputation of being an upright man, he has come out of the ordeal bigger and more respected than ever before. The dirty trick did not pay off.

    Swami’s sins are unacceptable.

The article “Swami Prakashanand and the Sins of Society” published in Hindu Mahasabha of America on March 12, 2011 begins with the news that Swami Prakashnanda is found guilty on charges of child molestation. The article also includes his guru Jagat Guru Kripalu (JKP) Maharaj. The author provides the pertinent facts with names of the accusers. The author accepts the fact that Prakashanand was surrounded by women devotees and also states that one important teaching of the Hindu religion is to prohibit excessive intermingling between men and women. He narrates the story of Shree Chaitanya and how Shree Chaitanya was extremely dispassionate. But being aware of all these facts and values of morality, for whatever odd reason, it seems author continues to defend Prakashnanda of his sins by bringing subjects like sex and the society, sex on TV, porn from the internet and he goes on rambling.

He blames the Christian Media for this propaganda. The actions of
Prakashnanda are acceptable to the author because according to him these are the norms of the society and so what if so called Swami Prakashananda did this. And then all of sudden out of no where and out of context he brings Swami Vivekananda into picture to emphasize – Hindu religious teachers should appreciate the great dangers of developing intimacy with people of opposite sex and should exercise extreme caution when dealing with members of opposite sex, especially when the latter are minors. According to him he does that to give authenticity, of god knows what kind, to his article. Well, he succeeded because his article is published by Hindu Mahasabha of America. Should I give kudo to Hindu Mahasabha of America for publishing such article or well you readers should decide that. The article got some publicity and comments both for and against. The tone of these comments caught my attention.

Let us put some of the facts straight before analyzing these comments as well as the article. Radha Rani as referenced in the article was a childhood friend of Shree Krishna when Shree Krishna was a boy growing up in Gokul in Nanda and Yashoda’s household. At the age of eight he was taken to Mathura by Akrura where Shree Krishna killed his uncle Kansa. So this is the love between a child and young Gopi. The story became immortal over the period to emphasize the undying devotion represented as kind of love between God and devotees. Neither Prakashananda nor Kripalu are eight year old or God. And this concept of Radha Krishna does not represent in any form consortium of young female with so called Swamijis of Radha Rani Ashram. In Hindu tradition the title “Swami” is associated with a pious person who has attained higher spiritual level through sadhana, tapascharya, and study of Hindu scriptures. He or she is considered knowledgeable (Dnyani), dispassionate, abandoned sensual pleasures, and very strict in observing the rules of Sanyasa. He or she has conquered all the six weaknesses – Ego (DAMBHA), Jealousy (MATSARA), Greed (LOBHA), Passion (KAMA), Anger (KRODHA), and Delusion (MOHA). He is Guru of all us – the followers. In a nutshell any Tom, Dick, and Harry cannot become or attain the level of Swami. It is a highly respected title and as such must be in a position to refrain himself or herself from common human weaknesses. Therefore, defending the actions of Prakashnanda or Kripalu who call themselves as Swami Prakashnanda and Swami Kripalu Maharaj is improper. Excuses like “Swamiji made a mistake and got carried away”,”was brainwashed” or “any man can get carried away if he is in regular contact with beautiful women or girls”, or “blaming to TV, media, U-tube,” etc. for defending the actions of Prakashnanda and Kripalu Maharaj’s is an insult to title of “Swami”.Christian priests are like Pujari or priests of the Hindu Mandir. Swami is supposed to be spiritually at much higher level. So asking for statistics for priests or Pujaris who have done these scandals and because of such and such reasons Swami’s actions are acceptable make no sense. The comments like “what Swami Kripalu has given to the Hindu world, we are less then insects, in front of these saints” are deceptive because some religious authorities like him may be camouflaging their hideous desires with the mask of some good work by using the donations of the good Samaritans. We are degrading ourselves when we make these kinds of excuses and provide justifications for such actions. It is difficult to decide whether respected Swamis are guilty or not. We do not know all the truth.

But at the same time these respected Swamis have history of allegations and abuse, and preceded by similar controversies in India for several decades. We are all aware of the facts that Hindu religion has many enemies. Christianity is one of the elements. These enemies may try to discredit and malign Hinduism. It is very possible that any popular Hindu preacher runs the risk of being charged with these kinds of things falsely through Church machinations. But in present context using these rationalizations to defend Prakashnanda and Kripal’s action may not be justified.

I remember, few years back we made reservation in the Barsana Dham ashram for four days and visited Barsana Dham in Austin, Texas. Next day after witnessing some of the rituals like Radhikas offering Bhog to Swamiji, young girls clad with saffron cloth roaming around in the compound and kind of pampering Swamijis, we cancelled the reservation, said bye and left. So whenever I see some pictures of celebration of various Hindu Festivals sent by Barsana Dham where number of men and women dancing in the procession I felt kind of uneasy (difficult to verbalize my feelings).

Having said all these we now come to the basic question of assigning the blame where it belongs. “Duniya zukti hai, zukanewala chahie” – I would say we the Hindu community with blind faith pour millions of dollars in donation to support these kinds of activities. In India general population is ignorant, and engulfed in blind faith and traditions that are carried over for centuries. It is true that over millennia some people took advantage of this blind faith and traditions to satisfy there own hidden agenda and lust and did harm the local communities. But that is not the case here. The times have changed. With the help of Media, Internet, and advance communication system it is easier to implement control and if possible completely stop these activities. Instead, we see exactly opposite happening. People are pouring money and so called Gurus are enjoying the luxury – “Duniya zukti hai, zukanewala chahie”. Please bear in mind all of these so called Gurus are extremely intelligent but instead of using that intelligence for promoting good cause they became prey to their own greed. I apologize to few honest and learned Gurus who are doing extremely good work. But they are very few. We see these kinds of allegations encroaching time and again. Last year only we heard about Swami Nityananda. Some said in his defense that he was experimenting with tantra. Previously we heard similar allegations for Maharshi Rajnish, and so on. I only request to the intellectuals like you who will read this through the Media of FHRS and all others if they get to read this write up to put a stop on these activities by not defending these fakes.

Another question that crops up to mind and it is appropriate to bring this here because we see many Swamijis coming out of India for whatever agenda they have and the devotees are bearing the cost with heavy donations that are tax deductible. One reason could be Dharma Prasar or Dharma Prachar and another is to educate the ignorant Hindus who have migrated to various countries. Think for a moment, Sanatan Dharma does not have a concept of conversion. I believe that in Vedas and Upnishadas, there is no correlation or reference to that effect. So that may not be the reason for these religious dignitaries to go abroad. I heard this from many sources and whether it is true or not I do not know, that whenever a person takes birth, at birth he or she is Hindu and then through other Sanskaras like baptism they then become Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. I have no comment on this. The other about migrated ignorant Hindus, I find many of them are learned intellectuals and capable ambassadors for Sanatan Dharma.

I know this is a brief and quick comment on what I read in the FHRS issues and many of you may not like my observation. But please read and I would like to hear your comments, opinions, criticisms from you through FHRS Media. As closing statement I will say if we support them then we create them.

And when some of them become monsters and get caught then we either blame western media or Christian media and Hinduism bears the blemish. But we completely forget that responsibilities lie within us.

    Vijay Shertukde.

My only intent is to share my unfortunate experiences with these two “swamis” who have ill-intentions. My comments and opinions have NOTHING to do with HInduism — except to say these men are using this beautiful religion to commit and get away with egregious acts, and I want to warn others to avoid them.

You say that Hindus do not convert. Who said that?? May be your grand father. In modern times Hindus have started converting. If Hindus do not convert they will die out by getting converted. Look at ISKCON. It was because Swami ji was converting that he made so many enemies (Xtians). It is possible that he made mistakes. He should not have mixed with women. A monk i.e. sanyasi should not even look at women. A monk should not talk to women. Swami jee made grave errors of judgement, but it is also a case of religious persecution.

Please visit the above page to see how a hindu saint’s mission has been attacked by these few people.

        (3) I just went through the comments on this page and my analysis is that everyone who has a question about the facts of this case is attacked by Rishika.

This was written in response to these people who did not agree with Rishika / Karen Johnson.

[ to Ved – maybe you are just a loser? just a thought!

to Ved – you are over the top with your accusations.

to Ashok — you are showing yourself to be a Kripalu supporter.

to Ashok — It’s funny you would say that

to Ved, Maybe you don’t like white people

Wrong. Wrong. and Wrong. i’m done talking with you. you are hopeless.

        FINE Ved. Go worship Kripalu.

oh my god. you are sick.]

        (4) And then comes a guy who writes along the same line (as Rishika or Karen Johnson) with his little knowledge of who saints are and what is the need of a spiritual teacher as evidenced in vedas.

There starts his worship by Karen or Rishika and he is given the status of being on their bizarre wall! Notice how Vijay become Vijayji for Indian sounding Rishika who in reality is Karen Johnson. (Vijayji, My God, your words are like nectar in a sea of erroneous information)

Her intentions are very obvious! Agree with me or else you are stupid! Mind control and bullying is what I see, by a manipulative non Indian woman who is trying to sound Indian.

JP – and what is your name, by the way? Or yours for the record Sushma Sinha? or yours Swami Prakashananda (notice the A at the end)?

Sushma has a photo of some Indian actress on her Facebook page and JP is Jake Pepper, apparently a model with six-pack ads (also apparently a reporter, student writing a paper, or a law student – take your pick). Along with “Swami Prakashananda” they are my biggest fans. They are following me all over the internet and constantly acting like they “got me!” Hahahaha. It’s so amusing.

You three sound suspiciously like some of the people inside of Barsana Dham (the leadership!) — full of slander and hate. That “look to urself” statement is right out of Prakashanand’s mouth. And this whole idea of me becoming widely known in Hindu circles for being against Hinduism is a slanderous statement. I’ve never said one single word against Hinduism — I am always talking only about two men who call themselves HIndu gurus and those who help them run their scam. That is exactly the kind of divide and conquer propaganda that Barsana Dham is built on. However, that rhetoric doesn’t work on me, sorry.

My point now and will always be — Prakashanand Saraswati and Kripalu Maharaj have used HInduism to hide a well-oiled organized crime ring for 50 years. They have taken people’s money and raped their daughters and had sex with their women. I am warning people. If anyone doesn’t want to listen, well don’t say I didn’t warn you.

By the way, the reason Prakashanand “went after white people” when he came to the U.S., as someone here pointed out is this: (1) he made a beeline for westerners who were followers of the Maharishi Mahesh yogi (he thought they would be easy to convert), and (2) he could not get very many Indians to follow him. Why? Because they knew about his shady past in India with Kripalu.

Actually we consider Gurus even above God. But most of them are failure to do any good to their followers. And knowing well the soft-corners of the devotees, Gurus are turned hard to extrude their luxurious life cutting from the wealth each and everybody, even from their poor followers. This is the general phenomenon likely to see around. The exceptions are exceptions. That is rare.

India and abroad are full of Hindu Gurus. But Hindus are the most mislead, unorganized, disunited, irresponsible and hypocrite and self-destroying community in this world. This is the End Result. Hindu Gurus are totally unsuccessful to save this Hindu Nation.

      A. So since Rishikaji aka Karen Johnson could not understand the above phrase she has adopted a new funda and that is for hindu teacher/leaders to turn against one another. People do not have to go far to discredit her but just watch Kripaluji’s speeches every day to see if he says or implies in his being God or even being alone in the true path of Hinduism.

You may hear many saints talk about Bhakti yog to be the ultimate way to God which simply put means loving God. And they teach Bhakti yog so does that mean he alone knows the true path? She sure wasted 16 years that she claims to have lived in the ashram (if she did?)

      man-mana bhava mad-bhakto
      mad-yaji mam namaskuru
      mam evaishyasi satyam te
      pratijane priyo ’si me

Kripaluji does not say this for him but for Shree Krishna.

And I think all the Hindu Teachers are quite busy with real jigyasu’ to assist in their spiritual journeys and I am also sure they know that “Jab Hathi Chaley….” so they do not respond to any anonymous (these days online) barks.

      B. Infact, US Law says clearly that the jury of the peers will be provided for eveyone for justice. In this case I want to know how many peers or people like him were there in this so called jury. Any hindus? Indians? spiritual teachers?

This note was posted by a follower of Barsana Dham on one of the dozens of articles written by Eric Dexheimer, who followed the case since its inception. Eric Dexheimer has acted as a mouth-piece for the Hays County District Attorney and the extreme hate group “The Truth Project” (who’s membership includes some of the false accusers against Swami Prakashanand Saraswati and who is led by Karen Jonson who uses the pseudoname Rishika)

To Eric Dexheimer: Why is it that you have written NOT ONE WORD about the extremely prejudicial manner in which Shree Swamiji and the people at Barsana Dham were treated during the trial? The DA was verbally abusive, mean-spirited and religously prejudiced filling the juries heads with wrong information with nary a concern for justice or truth. Hour by hour she mocked and insulted Shree Swamiji and Barsana Dham protraying the people there as evil, criminal and brainwashed.

She even mobilized a small army of armed officers to “protect her from the vegetarian, over 50 and peaceful minded devotees” who came to support Shree Swamiji . Did you know that they (Cathy Compton and Sherri Tibbe) had snipers in position on the roof of the courthouse with guns trained on the Barsana Dham devotees the day of the verdict who are parents, grandparents, doctors, housewives, office workers, you name it….ie. ordinary people – did you know that??? No, that was not of interest. You just piled on…even this story about the name change was leaked to you by a woman who runs a hate blog.

Of course now that I have spoken up in support of the ashram, I will be attacked here in this forum because, God forbid, I’m not joining in all the verbal bloodletting. Okay…I’ll say it so you all so you don’t have to. I’m evil, I’m brainwashed, I’m criminal. There, now I did that for you.

Eric, use your considerable intelligence to look into the broader circumstances of the trial. The charges were 15 years ago, there was no evidence, there were no witness, there was lost testimony, there was an outrageous bail/bond amount and the punishment was totally off the charts….280 years! 280 years!!! A murderer in Texas gets 25 years! Lawrence Taylor gets 6 years PROBATION for rape of a minor!!! Case after case – do your research, Mr Dexheimer.

And remember that as a man if you get into an elevator with a woman and you are alone with her, in a matter of few minutes while the elevator takes you to another floor your life can be ruined and you can easily be convicted of molestation – without evidence, without witnesses purely on her testimony. I can tell you that I will no longer be alone with any woman except my wife.

The judge, the DA and ADA partook of a real southern style lynching. I myself have be sobered to my core. I thought trials like this were the stuff of an older, more biased generation. It is not so – prejudice is alive and well in Hays Country, Texas.

The only yardstick for measuring the purity of a person is to observe that person and his actions. His actions reflect the state of his mind- whether pure or impure. A completely pure person always acts kindly, is benign, compassionate and selfless. Only the realized saints truly deserve to be called as completely pure personalities.
    Who is a Saint?
A saint is one who is fully established in the true teachings of the vedas and by dint of God’s spiritual grace, he is fully well versed in all of the vedic literature; he doesn’t even need to read any single sloka or verse to remember it’s number, context, complete meaning and other nuances. Such saints are , BY DEFAULT, pure and of pristince nature, completely free from lust and desire. Swami Prakashanand Sarasvati is one such saint and his master, Sri Kripaluji Maharaj is the pinnacle of devotion. The divine truths of such persons are easily revealed in their actions and more importantly, their words. When you’ve seen a speech by Sri Kripaluji only then will you be able to glean the tip of his spiritual realization. There is no other way. Evidence can be planted, a so called disciples scruples can be supplanted but the COLD HARD truth will never change. These personalities are divine saints who have graced the apogee of God-realization.
Let there be no doubt in the ordinary Hindu that even Swamijis can be swayed with lust or desire. He is not a real swamiji if he is influenced by lust. Real swamijis have no sexual desire because they simply have no taste for such things; their taste is excellently refined: they have taste only in all things related to God.
Conspirators are EVERYWHERE, in every religion-even hinduism. Especially when the particular organization has been so ultra successful, conspirators are bound to be there. But I sincerely ask the people who read this news to at least check Sri Kripaluji Maharaj’s speeches on Sri Radha Krsna Bhakti.
I have seen both of them- Swamiji and Maharajji and let me tell you that extremely intelligent people come to their ashrams, even in the Vrindavana one where I’d gone. His devotees have FULL faith in his sainthood. I have personally seen Maharajji in trance. It’s very easy to slander someone. And do not forget that although bad things happen to bad people, worse things happen to the pure people. Vedic history shows that most major avatars of the Lord were slandered, his devotees were subjected to even worse slander.

I have visited Barsana Dham since I was 15 years old. Granted yes even when I fist saw Swami Prakashananda, and Kripaluji Maharaj one thing struck me as odd. Women and too many of them. Usually in our hindu culture Saints are told to stay away from women and they renounce even being too close in proximity. Especially if they take “Sanyas”. They are suppose to look at women as their daughters, mothers, and sisters. Correct Me If I am Wrong Here. So that part was extremely confusing. But on the other hand if you have not renounced the material world then you live a “grihasta” lifestyle with a wife, kids, and familly. Take a Lesson from Shri Ramkrisha Dev. What a fabulous character and devotee of the “Divine Mother”. His Follower “Shri Ramkrishna, who took Sanyas…and what a excellent student he turned out to be. But no one had any such accusations or retaliations. So that makes me think….How Pure Are You? Are You Really What You Say You Are? Is the belief that strong? Then how come Radharani didn’t save Swamiji? Sure there are many lilas she performs but I would think to her utmost Devotee she would save the situation at no cost. She can do any miracle she pleases! Why was it not done? We read about this stuff, pray, chant, sing, so was Swami Ji really not that surrendered? It just makes me think. Its wise in my opinion to not get involved with any religious affiliation. Sure take a lesson but in the end its your journey with The Divine. You can Experience the same Bliss Within You. I welcome any thoughts or comments. I am not criticizing or supporting I am just stating my opinion. “Radhe Radhe” Friends….and yes my name really is Radha! I always get teased at work and school! :)

In hinduism, saints are supposed to be egoless meaning that they are in unison with God. Saints are supposed to guide people towards God whereas almost all modern gurus including kripaluji maharaj are highly egoistic and are just indulging in self glorification. I have heard krupalu maharaj on TV and have read their quarterly magazine. I have found his preachings highly objectional. Some examples are given below :-

    1. In almost every lecture and their quarterly magazine they repeatedly say that normal god fearing people are committing sins since infinite lives and creating guilt in the mind of the followers/viewers/readers.
    2. Maharaji asks his followers to unconditionally surrender to him instead of surrendering to God. Most of the articles in their quarterly literature are directly/indirectly used for self glorification. In almost 80 % of the articles, the importance of guru is being highlighted and fed into the minds of the followers that Bhagwat prapti cannot be done without a Guru. If they firmly believe that Bhagwat prapti cannot be done without a guru than how did Kripalu maharaj claims to be an enlightened soul without any guru. As per my information, kripalu maharaj have never indicated that he had a guru. IF he can be enlightened without a guru than why can’t his followers repeat the same.
    3. During his tv lectures, he asks the viewers to not to use their brains during his lectures. Why should one not use his brain to make a balanced judgement. The almighty God Sri Krishna have given us brains to discriminate between the good, bad and the ugly and this guru says don’t use your maayik and sansarik buddhi. Why ? Do they consider the ordinary person as fools and sinners incapable of using their buddhi OR they are the only one licensed to use their buddhi?
    4. Hidnu religion says that when a devotee renounces Sansaar, his/her antakaran becomes pure and the divine God guides you in the spiritual journey. My understanding of Sansaar is [SANSAAR -Desires, lust, greed, anger], whereas this people interprets that sansaar is family, friends, etc who are not associated with JKP organisation. JKP interpretation of SAnsaar have destroyed many families.
    5. Kripalu maharaj preaches that loving your parents and family is a sin. This statement was made in his TV appearances. He says one should love only God and Mahapurush like him. This clearly violates our scriptures because not a single hindu scripture says that loving and respecting parents is a sin. However, his devotees who have abandoned their family feel proud of their achievement of leaving the family. This is a religiously and socially unacceptable statement which can destroy the social fabric of the society.

There are many other points which are highly objectionable and aimed at exploitation. I have the literature with me to prove the above points.

To be a professional you have to have a degree in the field. Sadly these godmen, who are also outright professionals, just emerges out of the blue. Please reflect for a moment if they have done you any good to you. We all know the righteous way of life, we know what is virtue and what is sin. Why do we need these godmen in our lives? Insecurity? The short cut road to success? What for is it really? To clear the fuzzy zone between the two and to convert our sins to virtues?? I dont really blame these poor godmen. Its us who have raised them to the status they enjoy. Its our foolishness that we part with our wealth and what not. Why not do philanthropy yourself or through established institutions like the Ramakrishna Mission and Bharat Sevasram? Do you get hypnotized? Or is it nice to have yourself cushioned by the powerful Bhaktas?

I HEARD SO MUCH AGAINST OSHO. HE WAS ARRESTED IN USA. YET I FOUND HIM MOST HELPFUL IN MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY. KRIPALU JI GROUP IS VERY DEDICATED TO BHAKTI. WE SHOULD SUPPORT THEM. THEY MAY HAVE COMMITED MISTAKES, BUT WHO IS PERFECT. WE LEARN FROM MISTAKE. I ADMIRE THE WORK OF KRIPALU JI GROUP. WE SHOULD UNITE AND HELP THEM NOT KEEP ARGUING.

  44. radhe radhe,

i thank this site operators for allowing such a unbiased discussion to go through.

    1. only god or the saints themselves can know who is right or wrong. courts depend on the testimony of some people, who can be biased themselves.

1a. we are discussing about some saints, they say are not good, i request everybody to name a few hindu saints, which are good. i start with my guru, sadhvi ritambhra.

1b. can some body find some example of any priest, of the level of saint kripalu ji maharaj, who has ever been tried and given punishment by western or middle east countries.
if we can not name anybody, that means, that all the priests of these relegions are spot less.

2.. sanatam dharma is the only dharma, which is full of knowledge, all others are relegions and sects, with their child like books and knowledge.

    3. hindus are the most ignorant , people on earth, by and large, including me, they never take trouble of reading the scripture, or practicing it, or telling to their children to learn them, to whom they love to send to christian missionary schools.
ask yourself truly, that the children in who many hindus, have ever read any scripture book. (my children has not read also).

    4. they are most coward race on the earth. their are more than a billion hindus in india, and yet they are begging for their existance, ( the name of this beautiful site, prooves that).

    5. dear hindu brothers, please convert ourselves, and our children and homes to hinduism, then no body will dare to scold the hinduism, and their saints.

by discussing a few controversies about a few hindu saints, we are fulfilling the wishes of some western traitors who wish to keep the controversies alive.
