Raipur | Nagpur, September 15, 2012: Former RSS Sar Sanghachalak (Supreme Chief) Kuppalli Sitaramayya Sudarshan (born June 18, 1931 – died September 15, 2012), who was known for his hardline views of ‘Hindutva’ and believed in the concept of ‘Swadeshi’, died in Raipur on Saturday after suffering a heart attack.
Sudarshan, 81, is survived by a brother and sister.
The ex-RSS chief, who had arrived in the city two days back, died at the RSS office here at 6:50 am. He had arrived in the city on Thursday from Jabalpur and was staying at the local RSS office, Jagriti Mandal, Pandri. According local RSS workers, the former sarsanghchalak had come here to release the book of Chattisgarh Rajya Sabha MP, Gopal Vyas. The book release function was held on Friday evening.
A RSS worker who was present at Jagriti Bhawan this morning said Sudharshan apparently suffered a “massive heart attack” and died within few minutes. “He complained about chest pain at about 6am and we immediately called a cardiologist. However, the doctor, who came at about 6.30am, pronounced him dead”, he said. Sudarshan was reportedly a heart patient and had undergone a bypass a decade ago.
[Other source says: According to Vikas Telang, an official of RSS headquarters, Sudarshan had gone for his usual morning walk Saturday and later returned to the RSS headquarters in Raipur.
Some RSS volunteers noticed that Sudarshan had fallen down while meditating in his room, said Telang.
Believing him to be asleep, they shook him but he was motionless. Later, a medico was summoned who confirmed Sudarshan dead.]
His body is being taken to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur and will be kept there for the people to pay their last respects, RSS members said. His last rites will be performed on Sunday at 3 pm in Nagpur.
Sudarshan was born in Raipur (now in Chhattisgarh) in a Sanketi Brahmin family. He did his Bachelor of Engineering in Telecommunications (honours) from Sagar University.
He was only nine years old when he first attended an RSS Shakha. He was appointed as a pracharak in 1954. Only full-time members of RSS can become pracharaks. His first posting as a pracharak was in Raigarh district. In 1964, he was made the prant pracharak of Madhya Bharat at a fairly young age. In 1969, he was appointed convener of the All-India Organisations’ Heads. This was followed by a stint in the North-East (1977) and then, he took over as the chief of the Boudhik Cell (the RSS think-tank) two years later. In 1990, he was appointed joint general secretary of the organisation. He has the rare distinction of having held both posts of sharirik (physical exercises) and baudhik (intellectual) pramukh (chief) on different occasions.
A known votary of swadeshi, he served as Pracharak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for six decades and became its Sarasanghachalak in 2000 succeeding Rajju Bhaiya. He stepped down from the post due to poor health.
A native of Kuppalli village in Mandya District of Karnataka, Sudarshan was known among the Sangh workers for his physical training.
He was known for making polemical statements against BJP leaders. After the 2004 defeat of the party in the Lok Sabha elections, Sudarshan had suggested in an interview that old guards like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani should give way to younger leadership.
During his tenure, Sudharshan, who was the first RSS chief from the south, stressed on economic sovereignty and construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
In August, he had briefly gone missing during his morning walk in Mysore.
Embodiment of a Karmayogi as specified by Srimad Bhagabad Gita, Sudarshanji had a unique power of inspirational exhortation and subtle organisational acumen.
