Yoga guru Baba Ramdev was hospitalised amid high drama after his health deteriorated rapidly on the seventh day of the fast-unto-death on Friday. Ramdev was carried on a stretcher and moved into a waiting ambulance as supporters chanted, “Sonia Gandhi murdabad”.
“Baba Ramdev agreed to be shifted to hospital. He has been shifted to Jolly Grant Hospital in Dehradun in an ambulance. The chief medical officer is accompanying him. We shifted Baba Ramdev to hospital only after obtaining the consent of his associates. We went by the advice of the doctors attending to him,” Haridwar District Magistrate R Meenakshi Sundaram told The Pioneer.
In a bid to persuade the yoga guru to call off his fast, Sri Sri Ravishankar, founder of the Art of Living, met him at the hospital when Ramdev was being shifted to ICU. Sri Sri told the media that the yoga guru was in a conscious state and urged him to tell his supporters who were also fasting to take lime water with honey. Sri Sri, who recently lost his father, had gone to Haridwar for immersion of the ashes.
“We requested him to end his fast. But Baba referred to others, including children, who are on fast, and told them to take lemon water with honey,” said Sri Sri.
Sri Sri described the police crackdown on Baba Ramdev and his supporters in Delhi “as unfortunate”.
Even as a shell-shocked nation watched on TV channels Baba being shifted to hospital, people from all corners of the country appealed to him to end his fast. Inexplicably, neither the Union Government nor the Congress took any step to reach out to the yoga guru. In its daily Press conference, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi only ‘wished long life for Baba” but did not urge him to break his fast.
On being asked whether the party will issue an appeal to Ramdev to call off his fast, Dwivedi reiterated the same response. But unmindful of Baba’s critical health, party general secretary Digvijay Singh continued his vicious attack on Ramdev claiming that trusts run by him were involved in money-laundering and demanded that Ramdev should declare the names of those who donated money to his trusts.
On party general secretary Rahul Gandhi keeping mum on the Ramdev issue, Singh said in Bhopal that he was capable of dealing with the Ramdev issue alone.
Doctors earlier told Ramdev to break his fast as he had been rapidly losing weight and his blood pressure had also dropped alarmingly. Haridwar district officials, including District Magistrate R Meenakshi Sundaram, had been trying to persuade Ramdev’s associates at Patanjali Yogapeeth on admitting him to hospital.
Doctors cautioned that Ramdev’s health would deteriorate further if his blood pressure and pulse rate continued to slide. Ramdev’s medical test reports on Friday said that his blood pressure had fallen to 104/70 and his pulse rate was recorded at 58. Ramdev’s weight on Friday was 58 kg.
The team of doctors, who checked the fasting yoga guru earlier on Friday, had warned that if Ramdev did not break his fast immediately he would suffer irreversible damage to his brain and kidneys.
Haridwar chief medical officer Yogesh Chandra Sharma had sent a report to the district administration urging immediate steps to end his fast. Ramdev had rejected all appeals by the district administration to end his fast and had even refused to take glucose.
“As Baba Ramdev’s health is deteriorating, he should stop his hunger strike immediately. We want to admit him to the ICCU so that we can do a cardiac checkup and other tests on him. Ketone bodies and albumin were found in his urine sample and his kidneys were not functioning properly. Baba Ramdev needs cardiac monitoring immediately,” Dr Sharma told media persons on Friday morning.
Supporters of Ramdev began a yajna at Yagyashala, where Baba has been observing his fast for the past seven days, immediately after he was taken to Jolly Grant Hospital. The yajna, participants said, was being performed for the Baba’s swift recovery.
Baba supporters hold up traffic: Supporters of Baba Ramdev blocked the Haridwar-Delhi highway on Friday afternoon soon after he was taken to Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences in Jolly Grant.
Hundreds of supporters, including medical students of Patanjali Ayurveda College and members of the Bharat Swabhiman Trust, sat on the road outside Patanjali Yogpeeth, holding up traffic in the area for several hours.
The protesters, who included women and children, were demanding Baba to be brought back from the hospital safe. Slogans of “Sonia Gandhi murdabad” and “Vande Mataram” rent the air.
Traffic in the area went haywire after protesters parked two tractors in the middle of the highway. Mid-afternoon commuters had a tough time as agitators blocked the road. With protesters gathering outside Patanjali Yogpeeth entrance gate in strength, a large number of vehicles ground to a halt on either side of the junction for well over two hours, causing much hardship to motorists.
Earlier there was commotion on Patanjali Yogpeeth premises as some of Ramdev’s supporters protested the district administration’s move to shift him to hospital. Some protesters even clashed with police when the yoga guru, who is on a fast against corruption and black money, was being taken out on a stretcher. The clash was, however, stopped immediately with help of ashram authorities.
