The sad story of Jaya Bhandari to Zoya Anwar.
HENB | Ranchi | January 08, 2015:: Now Love Jihad, Forced Conversion & Nikah, Dowry as ransom, Forced beef-eating, Brutal family torture, all in Islamic way were thundered upon a Hindu girl Jaya, as she believed a Muslim man named Anwar.
A Ranchi-based Hindu woman filed a police complaint on Thursday accusing her Muslim husband and his family of forcibly converting her to Islam in a case that harks back to the ‘forced conversion’ of a national rifle shooter that became a rallying point for right-wing organisations.
The issue of forced conversions, especially of women to Islam for the purpose of marriage, has been dubbed ‘love jehad’ by Hindu groups and has been used for justifying the controversial ‘re-conversion’ programmes of late.
Jaya Bhandari, a divorcee in her mid-thirties, on Thursday said she was forcibly converted by her second husband Waqar Danish Anwar, a Muslim man she met while working in a Ranchi hotel.
The first investigation report (FIR) says her in-laws allegedly name change in Muslim way and forced her to eat beef, besides assaulting her severely when she refused to pay a dowry of `5 lakh.
“The FIR has been lodged and the accused shall be detained soon for interrogation,” said Superintendent of Police Anup Birtharey.
Anwar, who works in a media organisation, could not be reached for comment. Sapan Mahtha, officer in-charge of Namkom police station, said Anwar and his father were absconding.
“Initially after marriage he tried to convince me to convert to Islam. But when I did not agree, he brought several maulvis in December 2013 (two months after marriage) at home and organized nikah and forced me to accept it. He subsequently changed my name to Zoya Anwar. He beat me up when I strongly objected to conversion,” the girl said adding that she was threatened with dire consequences if she opens her mouth.
The hotel management graduate said in her complaint that Anwar proposed marriage despite knowing she was a divorcee with a seven-year-old daughter.
Bhandari’s complaint said her name was forcibly changed to Zoya Anwar. “I was first confined to a room and tortured, where the forceful conversion and nikah took place,” she wrote in the complaint.
This is the second case of alleged forced conversion in Ranchi. Ace shooter Tara Shahdeo’s case is currently being heard by a court.
The couple had a love marriage solemnized on October 16, 2013 at a Hindu temple, after a few months of courtship when the two were working at a five-star hotel in the city. Interestingly the girl hails from Kishorganj locality in Ranchi where national-shooter Tara Shahdeo, a victim of love-jihad, also lives. The accused lives in Maulana Azad Colony, Namkum a Muslim polulated area in city.
“The girl did not dare approach the police because she has no one in the family. After she married a Muslim boy, her uncles were also not in touch with her,” said Bishwajeet Mukherjee, victim’s lawyer.
