Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina and citizen of all walks of life paid respect to late Sengupta throughout the day.
Atul Brahmachari | HENB | Dhaka | Feb 5, 2017:: Bangladesh Freedom fighter, Veteran Hindu Statesman, Constitutional Expert. Ex-minister and Legend Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta died at Labaid hospital in Dhaka early today after prolonged illness. He was 72.
He breathed his last at 4:24am, as stated by the hospital authority
Suranjit was suffering from cancer which led to the collapse of his central nervous system and due to that his lung stopped functioning. He was on life support at the hospital since last night.
Sengupta left behind his wife, only son, host of relatives and large admirers to mourn his death.
About 9:00am today, the body of the former railways minister was first taken to his Jhigatola residence where family members, relatives, AL central leaders and well-wishers paid their tributes to him.
Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the deputy speaker and whip also went to the residence to convey sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Among others, Mukul Bose, member of AL advisory council, Obaidul Quader, party general secretary, and Jahangir Kabir Nanak were present.
Later, Suranjit’s body was taken to the Dhakeshwari Temple in the noon.
Senior AL leaders, BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul and top officials of Indian High Commission in Dhaka were present there among others.
The body was taken to the national parliament premises at 3:00pm, AL sources said. Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina paid last respect to the departed AL leader with floral wreath and National guard of honor there.
The body will be kept at the mortuary of Labaid hospital from where it will be taken to Sylhet at 9:00am tomorrow and Sunamganj at 11:00am. It will be taken to the law maker’s constituency Dirai upazila of Sunamganj for cremation.
He was the AL lawmaker from Sunamganj-2 constituency and a member of the party’s advisory council. Also, he was the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the law, justice and parliamentary affairs ministry.
President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker of the Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, ministers and others dignitaries have expressed deep shock at the death of Suranjit.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia also gave her condolences at the death of the veteran parliamentarian.
Meanwhile, in a message of condolence, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla today said, “He (Suranjit) was clearly a leader of immense stature, standing, sagacity and dignity. His passing away represents an immeasurable loss for the country and leaves a void.”
Late Suranjit Sengupta was an uncompromising leader of the countrymen and obviously for the religious minorities of Bangladesh. He was attached to various Hindu organisations like Ramakrishna Mission, Bharat Sevashram Sangha and Gaudiya Mission.
By profession Suranjit was an legal practitioner of highest stature and his endeavour to strengthen the Minority Rights movement through various rights orgs and Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council is now a part of history he made.
In recent, his voice against the Hindu and minority persecution in Bangladesh and his demand to reinstate the original secular constitution of Bangladesh+ made a debate in Bangladesh even in the inner circle of Awami League.
For this relentless fight of Suranjit for minority rights, fanatic Muslims wanted to ban Hindu organisations in Islamic Bangladesh+ and hatched conspiracy against the veteran Hindu leader in Awami League..
Upananda Brahmachari, the chairperson of Hindu Existence Forum expressed his deep condolence for the departed soul and the bereaved friends and family members of Sengupta.

My Dear friend, Mr Surenjit Sengupta, my heart trembles on seeing your cremation at Derai, I may be at far away but how my mind could forget the Schooldays at the place of birth, how can I forget the performance of Saraswati Puja together, performance of doing theater together, political turmoil, snatched me far away and now the end of life, nothing is left except the old memory. If it is true the soul exists, the soul could not forget the past memory. However, who am I, on seeing so many well wishers I feel you are blessed by the God, blessed by the people of the present, and you will be blessed in eternity too. My heart cries to say goodbye to you forever. God is good, Almighty is merciful. Bye. Let the God keep your soul in peace. [HP (Gopal), NJ, USA]
