Upananda Brahmachari | HE Media Bureau | Gorakhpur | 12 Sep 2014:: Mahant Avaidyanath, the ailing ‘peetahdheesh’ (chief priest) of the Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur and father of present Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath, passed away late Friday following prolonged illness. He was 95.
Pujjya Guru Avaidyanath was ailing for more than two months and had been admitted to Medanta hospital in Gurgaon for two months. He was flown in an air ambulance Friday evening to Gorakhpur after doctors attending on him gave up hope of his survival.
His body is being taken to the Gorakhnath temple where thousands of his followers are likely to converge to pay their last respects.
Former Lawmaker Mahant Avaidyanath, had also been in the forefront of the movement for Ram Temple in Ayodhya and always have been considered as a senior pontiff of Ram Janmabhoomi Mukti Andolan (Rama Birth Place Liberation Movement. He was also the key person for country wide Go-Raksha Andolan and 1966 anti-cow slaughter agitation in Delhi in its massive demonstration outside Sansad Bhavan in New Delhi on 7 November 1966, the Gopastami Day.
The seer was at the forefront of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s and Avaidyanath was elected MLA from Maniram Assembly segment five times – 1962, 1967, 1969, 1974 and 1977. He was elected Lok Sabha member from Gorakhpur as an Independent candidate in 1970 and won again in 1989 as candidate of Hindu Mahasabha. He was elected MP from the same seat in 1991 and 1996 as Bharatiya Janata Party nomine.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of Mahant Avaidyanath, saying “he will be remembered for his patriotic zeal and determined efforts to serve society.”
“Saddened over the demise of Mahant Avaidyanath ji. He will be remembered for his patriotic zeal and determined efforts to serve society,” the Prime Minister said.
Central Home Minister Rajnath Singh and State BJP president Laxmikant Bajpayi has condoled the death of Avaidyanath.
BJP spokesperson of Gorakhpur region Satyendra Sinha said the party has cancelled the two-day training camp of party workers of Gorakhpur region that was scheduled to begin in Kushi Nagar Saturday. Satyendra said Avaidyanath’s body would be placed in the Gorakhpur Gorakhnath Temple for public to pay tributes on Saturday. He will be put into earth Samadhi ( buried) in the designated place within temple campus on Sunday according to the rituals of Nath Tradition in the presence of highest Sant Samaj.
