ENS | Kochi | Aug 20, 2017:: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday re-registered the FIR in the Hadiya case at the NIA-II Court. The case pertains to the religious conversion of Akhila alias Hadiya, a native of Vaikom in Kottayam district. The FIR 21/2016 registered at the Perinthalmanna police station has now been re-registered by the NIA. Aboobacker of Cherakkaparambu, Malappuram, is the accused in the case, which was registered under Section 57 of the Kerala Police Act, 153A, 295A and 107 of the IPC.According to the NIA, the Kerala police had initially registered a case over missing of Hadiya based on a complaint filed by her father Ashokan. However, later offences, including promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, malicious acts intended to outrage religious harmony and abatement, were included.
According to the NIA, after returning from Salem where she was studying for BHMS, Hadiya was staying at the residence of Aboobacker, the father of Hadiya’s friend Jaseena. As per the complaint filed by Ashokan, Aboobacker persuaded Hadiya for embracing Islam.“We are examining the documents and evidence gathered by the Kerala Police as part of the investigation. The statements of Hadiya, her father and Aboobacker will be recorded soon,” an NIA officer said.
The NIA will also probe into incidents of religious conversion of other women in Kerala. “We have three incidents in which women were radicalised by IS members. These women later migrated to Afghanistan. The investigation in the case will also verify whether there is a ‘larger mechanism’ to convert girls belonging to other religions to Islam,” the officer said. The probe into the Hadiya case will be supervised by retired Supreme Court Judge R V Raveendran. He will conduct sitting in the case in Bengaluru. In May this year, the Kerala High Court had nullified the marriage of Hadiya with Shafeen Jahan held in December 2016.
