1921 Puzha Muthal Puzha Vare: A Malayalam movie that exposed the Mopla Hindu massacre of 1921 in Malabar region.

‘1921 Puzha Muthal Puzha Vare’ -a film directed by Ramasimhan (formerly Ali Akbar) and based on the Malabar massacre on Hindus was highly opposed by the Malayalam Film Cencor Board. #PuzhaMuthalPuzhaVare has finally arrived in theaters in Kerala against many odds.

B Upendran | HENB | Kozhikode | Mar 4, 2023:: ‘Puzha Muthal Puzha Vare’ has finally arrived in theaters in Kerala against many odds. ‘1921 Puzha Muthal Puzha Vare’ is a film directed by Ali Akbar, now Ramasimhan after embracing Sanatan Hindu Dharma gets a success. The film includes the character of Variyankkunathu KunjahammadHaji in the lead role as a Jihadi leader who created havoc on the Hindus in Malabar massacre held in 1921. Even before the shooting, the film was full of controversies. The Malayalam Film Censor Board also put hurdles to pass it for release. Director Ramasimhan has responded to HENB  about the response to the film that hit the theaters yesterday.

Ramasimhan said that the film is getting good response. Even the night shows at the theaters are reported full house. There are only four shows right now because it’s just the beginning. It’s sure to be a success as apprehended. The film has not received any negative comments from anywhere. Cinema halls in Kozhikode as Crown, RP Ashirvad,  E Max, Surabhi and Farook are all getting good response. He added that by Monday, the film’s course will change and become a huge success.

The film was made by forming a popular association called ‘Mamadharma’ and accepting donations from the people. Thalaivasal Vijay plays as Variyankkunathu Kunjahammad Haji. Joy Mathew and RLV Ramakrishnan also play in the other lead roles.

Actually in 2021, the reputed filmmaker and pro-Hindutva leader Ramasimhan (formerly Ali Akbar) was excited to venture into producing 1921 – Puzha Muthal Puzha Vare (1921 – River to River), a Malayalam movie on Hindu massacre of 1921, engineered in the name of Khilafat Movement in Malabar region. He resolved to take up this initiative when CPI(M)-led Kerala Government declared projects to glorify notorious Muslim rioter Variyankkunathu Kunjahammad Haji, who led the inhuman massacre of thousands of Hindus including women and children, conversion of thousands of Hindus into Islam, sexual abuse of thousands of women and desecration and demolition of hundreds of Hindus temples, as a freedom fighter and portrayed the anti-Hindu Khilafat movement as a farmer’s agitation which turned to freedom struggle against the British.

Under the pressure of Malayalam Film Censor Board and Central Board of Film certification, Director Ramasimhan  had to compromise with the original contents of film  ‘1921 Puzha Muthal Puzha Vare’ in many respects.

The original scenes as below have been compromised in the resealed version as reported:

1. Ten Hindu people are beheaded by Muslims and thrown into Thuvoor well (Note: it is the well where hundreds of Hindus were beheaded and pushed into).
2. Jihadis in Malabar kill a calf, cut it into pieces, cook it and feed the Namboothiri Brahamins by force and compel the Hindu women to dress up like Muslim women do. (Note: According to belief, if a Brahmin eats beef, he turns an outcast and could never return to his community).
3. Reference of a Muslim Kingdom founded by Variyankkunathu Kunjahammad Haji in Malabar based on Sharia laws in the days of Malabar Massacre.
4. Quotation from the speech of late Madhavan Nair, Congress leader from Malabar, during Khilafat days that ‘Quran says, those who come against Muslims alone can be treated as enemies’.
5. The visuals of Nagalikkavu well. Several massacred Hindus were thrown into it just like Thuvoor well.
6. Visuals and reference to forceful conversion of Hindus into Islam during the Malabar Massacre days including the brutal torture upon Hindus and rape and molestation of Hindu girls and women.
7. Reference of Gandhi showing his support or soft corner for Malabar massacre or Malabar Rebellion or Moplah rebellion in 1921.

Even then, the released version ‘1921 Puzha Muthal Puzha Vare’ portrayed many meticulous cuts of the barbaric Hindu genocide made in the Malabar massacre of 1921 in the name of ‘justified’ Moplah rebellion.

The expected success of Ramasimhan’s film  ‘1921 Puzha Muthal Puzha Vare’ this year, has created a new phase of the film productions  to grab the factual story after a big hit seen in the ‘Kashmir Files’ by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri in last year.

The rewriting of History through making films has been started.
