PTI | New Delhi | May 28, 2023:: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar, saying his personality exuded strength and his fearless and self-respecting nature could not tolerate the mindset of slavery.

Paying homage to Savarkar on his birth anniversary during the 101st ‘Mann ki Baat’ broadcast, Modi said his sacrifice, courage and determination continue to inspire us.

Paying tributes to Savarkar, the prime minister said, “Today the 28th of May is the birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter, Veer Savarkar. The stories related to his sacrifice, courage and resolve inspire us all even today. I cannot forget the day when I went to the cell in Andaman where Veer Savarkar served the sentence of ‘Kala paani’.

“Veer Savarkar’s personality exuded strength and magnanimity. His fearless and self-respecting nature could not tolerate the mindset of slavery at all. Not only in the freedom movement, whatever Veer Savarkar did for social equality and social justice is remembered even today,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, several Union ministers and MPs paid floral tributes to Savarkar in the Central Hall of the old Parliament building.

Sengol

Historic ‘Sengol’ installed in new Parliament building by PM Modi.

Aniruddha Dhar | The Hindu Online | New Delhi | May 28, 2023:: Prime Minister Narendra Modi installed the sacred ‘Sengol’ from Tamil Nadu in the Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker’s chair, in the new Parliament building after performing puja on Sunday morning. Modi was handed over the historic ‘Sengol’ by high priests of various adheenams or maths in Tamil Nadu before its instalment in the new building. Modi took a decision to adopt Sengol as a national symbol of the Amrit Kaal.

This is the same Sengol that was accepted by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at his residence on the night of August 14, in the presence of several leaders.

Dressed in a traditional attire, Modi walked into the Parliament premises from its Gate No. 1 and was welcomed by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

Amid Vedic chants by priests from Karnataka’s Shringeri Math, the prime minister performed “Ganapati Homam” to invoke Gods to bless the inauguration of the new Parliament building.

The prime minister prostrated before the “Sengol” and sought blessings from high priests of various adheenams in Tamil Nadu with the holy sceptre in hand.
