Gujarat: Violent Muslim mob attacks police; sets vehicle on fire over removing illegally constructed Dargah in Junagadh.

Stones pelted, cops injured, one died, vehicles torched as Muslim mob protests against anti-encroachment drive in Gujarat’s Junagadh.

Upendra Bharti | HENB | Junagadh | June 17, 2023:: One person died allegedly in clashes that erupted in Gujarat’s Junagadh district on Friday night with a large group of Muslim people pelting stones at police personnel after civic body officials served notice to a dargah to present documents or face removal of alleged encroachment, police said on Saturday.  One Deputy SP, woman PSI, and several policemen were injured in the attack.

Junagadh Municipal Corporation served a notice to the dargah asking for presenting its documents within five days. Angered by the alleged anti-encroachment drive, 500-600 Muslim people of Jihadi mindset gathered around the dargah situated near the Majewadi Gate and pelted stones at police officials, vandalised property, and set police vehicles on fire.

According to the police, the situation is now under control and hundreds of police personnel have been deployed across Junagadh city. Talking to the press, Junagadh SP Ravi Shetty said, “There is a mausoleum on a road near Majewadi Road. The Corporation had issued a notice to that dargah five days ago that if anyone has a claim for it, he should present the same to the corporation. To express displeasure over this notice, 500-600 people gathered there on Friday night around 10 pm and started trying to block the way. After this, the police reached there where other policemen including DSP Hitesh were engaged. Tried to convince them for more than an hour but failed”. Sources said that, at that time some people started shouting slogans like ‘Allah ho Akbar”,  “Narendra Modi Murdabad” and “BJP Murdabad” while pelting stones from behind. The police then had to resort to lathicharge and used tear gas.  The policemen were injured in that stone pelting.

The injured police personnel were admitted to the hospital and police had to leave the place for sometimes under a high risk.

Giving information about the injured policemen, SP Ravi Shetty said, ‘DSP Hitesh has got four stitches, three constables have been injured while 2 policemen have suffered minor injuries. The police combed there overnight and we have detained 174 accused and suspects. We are examining more videos and will arrest all the accused. At present the situation is under control. Police are deployed everywhere in Junagadh city. Dozens of police officers including IG and hundreds of policemen are stationed here. All the policemen are safe. It is an unfortunate incident that should not have happened.

Junagadh is a communally sensitive area that is dominated by the people of the ‘Religion of Peace’.
