In political shift to the far right, anti-Islam, populist & Hindutva sympathizer Geert Wilders wins big in Dutch elections to be the next PM of Netherlands. 

Toeing down PM Modi’s line to expel Nupurs Sharma from BJP, Wilders came up gallantly to support Nupur for her stand to criticize Muhammad and hateful Islam after the brutal killing of Kanhaiyalal in Rajasthan in June 2022.  

Sumedha Oberoi | HENB | The Hague | Nov 23, 2023:: Geert Wilders’s far-right, anti-Islam Party for Freedom (PVV) has won most seats in the Dutch parliamentary elections, with 98 percent of votes counted. In a moajor political shift to the far right, anti-Islam, populist & Hindutva sympathizer Geert Wilders wins big in Dutch elections to be the next PM of Netherlands.  

The PVV won 37 seats out of 150, well ahead of 25 for a joint Labour/Green ticket and 24 for the conservative People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) of outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the partial results showed on Thursday.

“The Rutte era ends with a right-wing populist revolt that shakes [The Hague] to its foundations. The historic election victory that the PVV achieved on Wednesday exceeded all expectations,” Dutch centre-right daily NRC said.

The populist party now moves to form a coalition with at least two other parties to take the majority and appoint a prime minister.

From sources it is known that the Party for Freedom (PVV)  is confident enough to set Geert Wilders as the next Prime Minister of the Netherlands. 

The Anti-Islam Dutch politician made headlines in India in 2022 for defending Nupur Sharma over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad.

Toeing down PM Modi’s line to expel Nupurs Sharma from BJP, Wilders came up gallantly to support Nupur for her stand to criticize Muhammad and hateful Islam after the brutal killing of Kanhaiyalal in Rajasthan in June 2022. Wilder extended his support to Nupur in a series through his twitter handle. 

In Hague, Political parties were set to hold separate meetings Thursday to discuss the outcome before what is likely to be an arduous process of forming a new governing coalition begins Friday.

Despite his hard-hitting rhetoric, Wilders has already begun courting other right and center parties by saying in a victory speech that whatever policies he pushes will be “within the law and constitution.”

Wilders’ election program included calls for a referendum on the Netherlands leaving the European Union, a total halt to accepting asylum-seekers and migrant pushbacks at Dutch borders.

It also advocates the “de-Islamization” of the Netherlands.

He says he wants no mosques or Islamic schools in the country, although he has been milder about Islam during this election campaign than in the past.

Instead, his victory seems based on his campaign to rein in Islamic migration in Netherlands and European countries  — the issue that caused the last governing coalition to quit in July — and tackle issues such as the cost-of-living crisis and housing shortages.

“I think, to be honest, very many people are very focused on one particular problem, which is immigration,” voter Norbert  van Beelen said in The Hague on Thursday morning. “So I think that’s what people voted for, immigration and all the other aspects of leaving the European Union looking very inward as opposed to outward are just forgotten. It’s all about immigration.”

In his victory speech, Wilders said he wants to end what he called the “asylum tsunami,” referring to the migration issue that came to dominate his campaign.

“The Dutch will be No. 1 again,” Wilders said. “The people must get their nation back (from Islamic expansion).”
