Tapan Susheel | TNN | Roorkee | March 3, 2024:: Local police here faced an embarrassing situation when they buried the body of a 24- year-old man, who had been missing for two weeks, according to Islamic rituals. Victim Shivam Sharma’s family alleged that “there was an Om tattoo on his arm, clearly indicating that he was a Hindu, but the police conducted his final rites in a local graveyard”.

The family has now demanded a probe, alleging that Shivam was murdered. An inquiry has been ordered into the matter.

Shivam, a commerce graduate from Adarsh Nagar locality, mysteriously disappeared from his home on February 13.

His elder brother Amit registered a missing complaint on February 15. Two days later, police recovered his body from a canal under Manglaur police limits and buried it on February 21 after conducting a postmortem examination.

Shobhit Gautam, a relative of the deceased, said, “Shivam’s final rites were performed without informing us. We suspect foul play. It appears to be a case of murder and the police are attempting to protect the real culprit.”

SP (rural) Swapn Kishore Singh said, “I have submitted a confidential report identifying the sub-inspector responsible for negligence to seniors for appropriate action.” Later, the police exhumed the body and handed it over to the victim’s family.
