Nepal became a secular country in 2007, monarchy ended in 2008

Earlier, Prajatantra Party had also sent a 40-point memorandum to the PM Office in February. In this there was a demand to curb corruption. In fact, the rebellion against the monarchy intensified in Nepal in 2006. After several weeks of protests, the then King Gyanendra had to abdicate and hand over all power to the Parliament.

In the year 2007, Nepal was declared a secular country from Hindu. The following year, the monarchy was officially abolished and elections were held. With this, the monarchy that had been going on for 240 years came to an end. Since then there have been 13 governments in Nepal. Nepal has been politically unstable for some time now.

PM Prachanda had formed a new alliance with pro-China Oli

Recently, Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda broke the alliance with the Nepali Congress Party. He formed a new government with the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) led by KP Sharma Oli, which is said to have a pro-China stance.

Amidst all this, many groups associated with the monarchy are accusing the country’s major parties of corruption and bad governance. He claims that the people of the country are now fed up with the politicians.

Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N)  spearheading the demand of Hindu Rashtra

ANI reports: “Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Nepal to demand for reinstating constitutional monarchy and converting the nation to a Hindu kingdom. The protest called by the pro right-wing ‘Rastriya Prajatantra Party’ (Nationalist People’s Party), saw people marching and raising slogans for eradicating the current provincial government in the capital city of Kathmandu. Protesters scuffled with police and tore down barricades to enter a restricted-area after which the anti-riot force had to charge them down with water cannons. Former Maoist rebel chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who still goes by his nom de guerre of Prachanda (“Fierce”), is now Nepal’s prime minister heading a coalition with the centrist Nepali Congress party. A specially elected assembly abolished the 239-year-old monarchy in 2008 under terms of an accord that ended a Maoist insurgency, which killed 17,000 people between 1996 and 2006, and established a federal republic. A major section of the road that works as a lifeline of Kathmandu’s traffic came to a standstill as they took the road and marched towards Singha Durbar, the administrative capital of the Himalayan nation. Local authorities have been extending the prohibitory order for the area, resulting in frequent clashes during demonstrations that are held occasionally in the capital. Rastriya Prajatantra Party chairman, Rajendra Lingden, also a former Deputy Prime Minister, led the protestors into the restricted zone as they reached near Bhadrakali Temple, near the Army Headquarters, defying the prohibitory order”.
