Anti-Quota Protests in Bangladesh turned to anti-Indian, anti-Israel, anti-Hindu…

Islamists took charge of the Students’ movement in Bangladesh. Govt declares a mini-emergency. Death toll reaches 114. Minorities in fear.

Sadhan Sarkar | HENB | Dhaka | July 20, 2024:: Police in Bangladesh’s capital banned all public rallies on Friday after the deadliest day of ongoing violent student protests against ‘Quota system in top Govt jobs’ so far saw government buildings torched by demonstrators and the imposition of a nationwide internet blackout. The students’ movement was started after the completion of Friday prayer (Jumma Namaz).

In the wake of the quota-related turmoil Bangladesh government declared Sunday (July 21) and Monday (July 22) as “public holidays”, with only emergency services allowed to remain operational on those two days, according to Reuters. The number of casualties increased to 114. Apart from fatalities, the protests have injured thousands, according to hospitals across Bangladesh. The Dhaka Medical College Hospital received 27 dead bodies between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. (1100-1200 GMT) on Friday, reported Reuters. Meanwhile, the police imposed a ‘shoot-on-sight-order’, according to news agency AP.

As the cops  and military forces patrolled in Dhaka, the curfew in the city was relaxed between noon and 2 pm on Saturday, according to AP. The curfew is expected to continue till 10 am on Sunday, said lawmaker Obaidul Quader, the general secretary of the ruling Awami League party. Violence across 47 of Bangladesh’s 64 districts has now claimed a total of 105 lives, with over 1,500 injured, as quoted by AFP and local media. The news agency also reported Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s cancellation of a foreign diplomatic tour amid clashes.

Massive arson. looting, damage of Government and public properties are also reported. It is also reported that the Dhaka students’ movement has shaped in a very communal anti-Indian, anti-Israel and anti-Hindu agitation.

Though the Awami League Government led by PM Sheikh Hasina is trying its best to control the situation the fundamental leadership in the students’ movement took the charge to infuriate the communal sentiment against India, Israel and the minority Hindu people in Bangladesh. Accordingly, Indian students who are in different Universities and other Institutions are leaving Bangladesh risking their life in a hurry to enter into Indian states crossing the borders anyhow. Hindu minorities in Bangladesh are also in a deep fear, apprehending attacks on them at any moment.

While PM Sheikh Hasina has urged a peace not being fallen in a trap of ‘Razakars‘ (the communal force against Bangladesh liberation movement and killers of many Bangladesh freedom fighters and minority Hindus); the Indian High Commission in Dhaka has urgently issued an advisory to Indian citizens and students residing in Bangladesh to refrain from unnecessary travel and limit their outings due to increasing unrest in the country.

In an available video, it is seen that some leaders of the Students’ movement and Bangladesh Gana Adhikar Parishad were raising slogans against India and Israel and threatening the people (hinting to Hindus)  to leave the country.

They were raising slogans against alleged Indian  aggression in Bangladesh and to boycott Indian and Israeli goods. They were also raising slogans against PM Hasina to step down from power.

A British politician shared pictures of what looked like army tanks being deployed in the streets of Dhaka as Bangladesh remained cut off from the world with internet and phone lines suspended.

Sources say that many fundamental Islamic organisations including Jamaat, pro-Rajakar groups and BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party) are fanning the communal situation in Bangladesh using the ongoing students movement with very dangerous consequences.

The pro-Sharia and Jihadi people are very active in the current Bangladesh Students’ Movement who want to make Bangladesh an Islamic State.
