Sagun Saxena | HENB | New Delhi | Aug 19, 2024:: On August 18, the Bangladeshi diaspora staged a significant rally in New York, condemning the heinous atrocities perpetrated against Hindus in Bangladesh. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets, coinciding with the Indian diaspora’s 78th Independence Day celebrations at Times Square. The protest comes at a time when attacks on Hindu places of worship in Bangladesh including other brutality on the minorities in the country have intensified, following the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, amidst a surge in violence targeting the Hindu community.
This development comes on the heels of a phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, just a couple of days prior. During their conversation, the two leaders discussed the current situation in Bangladesh, following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and shared their perspectives on the unfolding events.
Meanwhile, the Indian-American community is abuzz with excitement about the event, hailing it as a ‘moment of pride’ that demonstrates their solidarity with the persecuted minorities in Bangladesh. Community members have expressed their enthusiasm, seeing the rally as an opportunity to stand in unity with those facing violence and oppression in Bangladesh.
The Hindu American Community has taken the initiative to organize a rally protesting the ‘ongoing Hindu genocide in Bangladesh’, allegedly perpetrated by Islamist groups with tacit complicity from state authorities. This move aims to raise awareness and condemn the systematic violence and persecution faced by Hindus in Bangladesh.
The organizers have also issued a urgent appeal to international leaders to intervene and prevent Bangladesh from descending into a fundamentalist Sharia state, emphasizing the need for swift action to safeguard the country’s secular fabric and protect its minority communities.

Bangladesh Hindus now 9% due to forced conversions and displacement: Amit Shah
Meanwhile, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the drastic decline in the Hindu population in Bangladesh from 27% during Partition to 9%, attributing it to forced conversions and displacement.
At an event in Ahmadabad on Sunday, where 188 Hindu refugees from Pakistan were granted citizenship certificates, Home Minister Shah highlighted the Citizenship (Amendment) Act’s (CAA) objective of providing rights and justice to refugees. He reassured the Muslim community that the law does not strip anyone of their citizenship but rather facilitates the granting of citizenship. On the sidelines of the event, Shah also hinted at possible relaxations to grant citizenship under CAA to persecuted and displaced minorities from Bangladesh, amidst the current wave of violence.
