Waqf Board’s Vast Holdings: Usha Thakur Claims Almost Half of India Under Its Control.

Usha Thakur’s Stunning Claim: Waqf Board Occupies Almost Half of India’s Territory.

Usha ThakurSumedha Shinde | HENB | Indore | Sept 12, 2024:: Addressing the media at the Indore Collectorate, Usha Thakur stated that the Waqf Board functions under laws that grant it absolute authority, allowing it to confiscate land without due legal process and unilaterally declare it as its own property, leaving no room for appeal or dissent.

Usha Thakur, a four-time BJP MLA and outspoken leader, has sparked controversy again by claiming that ‘almost half of India is occupied by the Waqf Board.’ She urged patriots to take a stand on the issue, which has been discussed in Parliament. At a press conference at the Indore Collectorate, Thakur alleged that the Waqf Board operates under laws that allow it to seize land without due process, declaring it as its own without scope for appeal or argument. She expressed concerns that such claims often occur without proper documentation or evidence, leading to disputes over property ownership and highlighting the need for scrutiny.

While Usha Thakur’s claim may be somewhat overstated, it is true that the Waqf Board holds an extensive portfolio of land, ranking third in terms of land holdings after the Railway and Defence departments. This significant land ownership has sparked debate and scrutiny, with some calling for greater transparency and accountability in the management of these properties.

Thakur emphasized that all patriots must stand united on this issue, reaffirming that India is a nation governed by the Constitution, which she poignantly described as ‘our soul.’ She stressed that no actions should be permitted to violate constitutional principles, underscoring the importance of adhering to Indian law. Thakur asserted that only those with proper certification and documentation under Indian law should be granted rights to property, ensuring a fair and just system.

The former minister’s remarks have sparked a political firestorm, exacerbating tensions surrounding the contentious issue of land claims and religious entities. Thakur’s call for unwavering commitment to the Constitution by all citizens and institutions has resonated, as she urged the rejection of any unsubstantiated claims. Her demands for a strict adherence to the Constitution aim to prevent the exploitation of loopholes and ensure a fair and just system.

The term ‘Waqf encroachment’ has become increasingly associated with ‘land Jihad’ in India, fueling widespread public resentment. There is growing outrage over the alleged collusion between land mafias and Waqf board authorities, who are accused of illegally seizing and selling Hindu lands and temple properties. This perceived nexus has sparked intense controversy and demands for greater accountability.

Recently, the Union Government established a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to revise the contentious Waqf Act 1995 through the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. This move aims to address the long-standing concerns and criticisms surrounding the existing legislation, which has been described as draconian.
