Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi | Sept 12, 2024:: A special court has delivered a verdict in an illegal religious conversion case, convicting 16 individuals. The sentences handed down include life imprisonment for 12 defendants and 10-year prison terms for four others. DGP Prashant Kumar acknowledged the decision, noting its significance. The case centered on a nationwide network accused of targeting vulnerable individuals, including the poor and disabled, with financial inducements to convert.

According to DGP Kumar, the ATS’s action will serve as a strong deterrent, conveying a clear message that strict action will be taken against illegal conversions. He hailed the judgment as a significant milestone, emphasizing that those involved in such unlawful activities will face appropriate consequences. ‘This is a landmark judgment,’ he stated. ‘We will take stern action against anyone engaging in illegal conversions that violate the rules.

In a significant verdict, the NIA/ATS special court delivered life imprisonment sentences to 12 individuals, including prominent figure Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui, in connection with an illegal Islamic conversion case earlier today.

In addition to the 12 life imprisonment sentences, the court also handed down 10-year prison terms to four other accused – Rahul Bola, Mannu Yadav, Kunal Ashok Chaudhary, and Salim – along with fines as per the relevant sections. Special Judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi delivered the verdict, sentencing a total of 16 convicts in the case.

Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui was taken into custody in September 2021 for allegedly masterminding a large-scale, nationwide illegal religious conversion syndicate.

But, it is interesting that this Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui participated in a program “Rashtra Pratham- Rashtra Sarvopari” held in a hotel in Mumbai on the night of 7 September, where his warm meeting with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat was flashed in the news headlines. In the month of August’21, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s cousin Anant Bhagwat had invited Maulana to attend the program after reaching Phulat Madrassa in Khatauli Block in Muzaffarnagar District of Uttar Pradesh on 18th August 2021. Anant Bhagwat is the Chairperson of Global Strategic Policy Foundation which conducted the programme in which  Chief guest Bhagwat met Special guest Kaleem Siddiqui.

DGP Kumar briefed the media on the case, explaining that the accused operated an Islamic Dawa Center in Delhi, where they ran an illegal conversion racket. They targeted vulnerable individuals, including the poor and disabled, with financial lures. Their network spanned multiple states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, and others. The case came to light when one of their operatives was apprehended in Ghaziabad and subjected to rigorous interrogation, revealing the illegal conversion scheme. The Uttar Pradesh Police subsequently informed the NIA, leading to a thorough investigation. Today, we see the culmination of this effort, as 16 accused were produced in court and received severe sentences. Twelve individuals, including masterminds Maulana Umar Gautam Qazi, Jahangir Alam Qazmi, and Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui, have been sentenced to life imprisonment, while four others received ten-year prison terms. A total of 17 individuals were charged, with one case being decided by the Hon’ble High Court.
