Hindu Woman gang-raped in East Burdwan, 5 Muslims arrested.

WB: Muslim youths gangraped a Hindu woman in front of her lover tying him with a pillar, 5 arrested by police in East Burdwan.

Sayan Das | HENB | Burdwan | Oct 31, 2024:: Five Muslim  youths were accused of gang-raping a Hindu woman (20 yrs) stuffing handkerchief in her mouth in front of her boyfriend. Within a few hours of receiving the complaint, the police of East Burdwan police arrested the five persons named Sheikh Sohail, Sheikh Rohit, Sheikh Siraj, Sheikh Manu and Sheikh Arif. It is known that Sheikh Rohit was harassing the 20-year-old woman for several days in order to make an intimacy with her. Allegedly, after that on Tuesday night, he called four more youths and tortured the young woman. Additional Superintendent of Police of East Burdwan district Arko Banerjee said, ‘The arrested youths have confessed to the crime. The victim will undergo medical tests. All kinds of cooperation will be given to him by the police.

According to police sources, a young couple was confronted by five youths, including Sheikh Rohit, in East Burdwan’s Bijoygram area on Tuesday night around 10 pm.. The couple was speaking in front of an under-construction house when the group suddenly appeared, questioning their ‘lonely late-night’ conversation.

Allegedly, Sheikh Rohit verbally abused the young woman, and the situation escalated. Three of the assailants tied the boyfriend to a pillar inside the unfinished house and gagged him with handkerchiefs. Meanwhile, the remaining two youths allegedly gang-raped the woman.

The perpetrators also robbed the couple of cash and the boyfriend’s mobile phone before fleeing.

Geeting compliants, East Burdwan Additional Superintendent of Police Arko Banerjee formed a special team and raided the area at night. The victim’s boyfriend told the police that one of the accused was known to him who was identified as Sheikh Rohit. Police earlier arrested Rohit from his house. He was interrogated and four others were arrested in the night. The couple brought a complaint to the Burdwan police station, but the case was filed in the Burdwan women’s police station. Initially, the police came to know that there is a love relationship between the victim woman and her lover  for three to four years. Recently Sheikh Rohit started harassing the woman. On Tuesday night, it was Rohit who first saw the duo and called the rest.

On Wednesday, the police presented the five accused one by one in the CJM court and and pleaded to take the accused in their custody. The judge granted seven-day police custody to the arrested.

As the the young man managed to came to a Burdwan police station to file a complaint with his girlfriend that night, the police acted swiftly.  After receiving the complaint, the police of Burdwan police station reported the matter to the District Superintendent of Police Sayak Das. On the instructions of the SP, Additional Superintendent of Police Arko Banerjee said, ‘Police have arrested five people based on the information provided by the lover and mobile phone tower location within a few hours of receiving the complaint. Police are collecting the rest of the evidence. Arrangements will be made by appointing special public prosecutors so that the guilty get severe punishment’.
