Sumedha Basu | HENB | New Delhi | Nov 14, 2024:: Tulsi Gabbard, the former Democratic representative and first Hindu Congresswoman in the United States, has been appointed as the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) by President-elect Donald Trump. This move marks a significant shift in U.S. political dynamics and national security policy, considering Gabbard’s progressive foreign policy views and military experience.
Tulsi Gabbard, who served in the US military, tapped by Trump to be the next intelligence director, is just 43. In fact, she is 12 years younger than the outgoing intelligence director — Avril Haines (55).
Gabbard’s appointment has sparked interest due to her unique background. Born in American Samoa and raised in Hawaii, she served in the Hawaii House of Representatives and later became a major in the Hawaii Army National Guard. Her military experience includes Operation Iraqi Freedom.
As a congresswoman, Gabbard represented Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district from 2013 to 2021. She gained national attention during the 2020 presidential campaign, advocating for progressive policies and criticizing U.S. military interventions. Although she suspended her campaign, she later endorsed Joe Biden.
In 2022, Gabbard left the Democratic Party, citing its control by “an elitist cabal of warmongers and woke ideologues.” Her switch to the Republican Party has earned her support from conservative circles.
As DNI, Gabbard will oversee 18 intelligence agencies and coordinate national security operations, pending Senate approval. Her appointment reflects Trump’s tendency to choose unconventional candidates for key positions.
Gabbard’s vocal condemnation of atrocities against Hindus and minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh has been notable. Her new role may bring attention to these issues, potentially influencing U.S. foreign policy.
Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu Congresswoman in the United States, has been vocal about condemning atrocities against Hindus and minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Her connection to Hinduism is deeply personal, as her mother, born on the US mainland, embraced the faith and raised her children in the tradition.
Gabbard’s own name, Tulsi, is derived from the sacred plant in Hinduism, also known as holy basil. She’s a lifelong vegetarian, and when she took her oath to enter Congress, she swore on the Bhagavad Gita, a significant Hindu scripture.
As a politician, Gabbard has taken a strong stand against Islamic terrorism in the Middle East and has criticized the Obama administration for not addressing Islamic extremism. Her experiences have shaped her views on foreign policy, military intervention, and combating terrorism.
In 2015, she introduced a bipartisan resolution, H.Res. 396, to recognize the victims of war crimes committed by Pakistan’s military and local Islamist militias during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation movement.
The resolution condemned the atrocities committed against Hindus and secular Bengalis, and also highlighted recent human rights violations against all religious minorities in Bangladesh. Gabbard expressed concern over issues of religious freedom and attacks against minority groups, including Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and others.
The resolution referenced the systematic violence against Hindus and other minorities by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its coalition ally, Jamaat-e-Islami, particularly during election-related violence in 2013 and 2014. It also noted the growing trends of religious violence and fundamentalism in Bangladesh. Gabbard tried her best to rise her voices against the persecution on Hindus in Bangladesh since 2015 and subsequent years in 2021-22. She had also raised the issue of Pakistan’s land being used by terrorists.
Gabbard’s efforts aimed to bring attention to the plight of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh and to encourage the U.S. government to take action to protect their human rights.
Though the appointment of Tulsi as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) is subject to the final approval of the Senate, Tulsi Gabbard’s nomination as Director of National Intelligence (DNI) has sparked concerns among Islamist groups and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). A shock wave is running among Islamist groups including CAIR, as reports are pouring in. This strong reaction is largely due to her vocal stance against Islamic terrorism and her support for stronger counter-terrorism measures.
