Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi | Jan 19, 2025:: Tensions are running high near Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) after members of the Akhil Bharatiya Karni Sena staged protests demanding the removal of alleged encroachments on a 125-year-old Shiva temple in Shamshad Market. The group, led by state president Gyanendra Chauhan, has given the district administration an ultimatum to clear the encroachments within a week, warning that they will reclaim the site if no action is taken.
The temple, built in 1899, originally included a rest house and an ancient well, which are now allegedly fenced off and occupied by others. Protesters alleged that a municipal official facilitated the encroachments through arbitrary interference.
Protests erupted at 11 a.m. when over 50 Karni Sena workers gathered at Tasveer Mahal crossing, attempting to march towards the temple. Police swiftly intervened, intercepting the group and escorting them to the office of ACM II Sanjeev Mishra. There, they submitted a memorandum, urging the administration to take action within seven days to remove encroachments around the temple.
Chauhan, speaking to the media, issued a stern warning: “We have given the administration a week to remove all encroachments around the temple. If no action is taken, we will reclaim the temple ourselves.” In response, ACM Mishra contacted Additional Municipal Commissioner Veer Singh, who confirmed that prior inspections had been conducted. Singh assured that a committee would be formed to investigate the matter and address any encroachments accordingly.
Furthermore, officials revealed that the tehsil administration is reviewing land records for Gate Number 342, where the temple is situated, and action will follow the report’s findings.
This incident is part of a broader concern, as Hindu organizations across Uttar Pradesh have raised alarms over alleged encroachments on other historic temples in the state. Similar incidents have been reported in other parts of India, including Maharashtra, where Hindutva organizations have protested against Islamic encroachments in historical forts.
The district administration has stationed police personnel around the temple to ensure peace and has formed a committee to investigate the matter. However, the situation remains tense, with protesters warning of further action if their demands are not met.
