Upendra Bharti | HENB | Meerut | March 20, 2035:: Sangeet Som, a prominent Hindutva leader and former BJP legislator, sparked controversy with his recent statements regarding the demolition of disputed structures in Mathura and Varanasi which were raised as Mosques after destroying Hindu temples. Speaking at a Holi event in Meerut, Som declared that these mosques would be demolished by a Hindutva mob, just like the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, without involving the courts.
Som claimed that removing the mosques would pave the way for constructing temples dedicated to Lord Krishna and Lord Bhole Shankar. He justified his remarks by accusing Mughal ruler Aurangzeb of atrocities against Hindus, including temple destruction in Varanasi and Mathura. Som argued that demolishing the mosques would erase Aurangzeb’s legacy, just like the Babri Masjid demolition aimed to erase Mughal emperor Babur’s legacy.
The crowd responded enthusiastically, raising their hands in agreement and chanting Hindu slogans. Som’s followers supported his statements, showering him with rose petals and echoing inflammatory slogans. His rhetoric aligns with the broader Hindutva agenda challenging Muslim historical presence in India, particularly regarding Mughal rulers.
Som’s statements have sparked concerns about communal tensions and violence. His rhetoric aligns with the broader Hindutva agenda, which seeks to challenge the forceful Muslim occupations over the Hindu temples perpetrated by Mughal rulers.
Sangeet Som’s statements have sparked controversy, coming amid a growing debate about Aurangzeb’s legacy and his treatment of Hindus. Som highlighted the destruction of the Kashi temple in Varanasi and the Mathura temple, significant symbols of Hindu faith, and argued that Aurangzeb’s actions were unjustified.
Som emphasized that Hindus should reclaim and rebuild their temples without relying on the courts, questioning whether Aurangzeb’s actions were justified by any court orders. He pointed out that Aurangzeb did not rely on legal authority to demolish temples and build mosques.
Som’s statements were made amid ongoing legal disputes over the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and the Krishna Janmabhoomi issue in Mathura. He alleged that Aurangzeb was responsible for demolishing temples, raping Hindu women, and killing Hindus.
Som demanded that signs of Aurangzeb be demolished and replaced with temples, asserting that Hindus have awakened and will take decisions regarding their temples without relying on the courts. He also criticized the Congress party for naming roads in Delhi after Aurangzeb and Akbar, calling it an act of defaming the country.
Historical records suggest that Aurangzeb’s reign was marked by the destruction of Hindu temples and the imposition of Jizya tax on non-Muslims, especially on Hindus.
