Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi | April 18, 2025:: In a chilling incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, a Hindu leader in Bangladesh’s Dinajpur district was kidnapped and brutally assaulted to death. The gruesome killing has brought to the fore the escalating violence against minorities in the country, particularly the Hindu community.
According to eyewitnesses and family members, Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent Hindu leader in Dinajpur’s Biral upazila, was abducted from his residence by four men on motorcycles. The assailants took him to Narabari village, where he was subjected to a brutal beating. Later, the attackers dropped Roy’s unconscious body back at his home in a van. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Roy succumbed to his injuries.
Wife of Bhabesh narrated the ordeal
Speaking to Bangladesh’s leading newspaper, The Daily Star, Chandra’s wife Shantana Roy said that four men arrived on two motorcycles and kidnapped Bhabesh from their residence on Thursday. Several witnesses also reported seeing the assailants taking Bhabesh to Narabari village, where he was brutally beaten.
Later that day, the attackers dropped Bhabesh’s unconscious body back at his home in a van. He was immediately rushed to the Biral Upazila Health Complex. Subsequently, he was transferred to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
The officer-in-charge of Biral Police Station said that police are working to identify and arrest the suspects involved, and preparations are underway to file a case.
A Pattern of Violence
This horrific incident is not an isolated one. A recent report by Ain O Salish Kendra (AsK), a Dhaka-based human rights organization, documented a staggering 147 incidents of vandalism targeting Hindu homes, temples, and businesses across Bangladesh. The report highlighted that a total of 408 households were vandalized, including 36 cases of arson. Moreover, 113 incidents of vandalism targeting business establishments owned by the minority community were reported, along with 32 incidents of attacks on Ahmadiyya mosques and 92 incidents of idol vandalism in temples.

Government’s Response
The Indian government has taken note of the deteriorating situation in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently raised concerns about the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh during a meeting with Bangladesh’s interim government leader, Muhammad Yunus, on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has also conveyed its concerns about the violence and atrocities against minorities, urging Bangladesh to take strong action against those responsible.
A Cry for Justice
As the news of Roy’s killing spreads, the Hindu community in Bangladesh is living in fear. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with demands for justice and protection for minorities. The Bangladesh government is under pressure to take concrete steps to ensure the safety and security of its minority communities and bring the perpetrators of such heinous crimes to justice.
The brutal killing of Bhabesh Chandra Roy is a grim reminder of the challenges faced by minorities in Bangladesh. It is imperative that the government takes immediate and effective measures to address these issues and ensure that such incidents do not recur. The international community is also watching closely, and it is hoped that Bangladesh will take the necessary steps to protect its minority communities and uphold their rights.
The situation in Bangladesh has raised concerns about minority rights under the interim Yunus Government. Reports suggest a rise in attacks on minority communities, including Hindus, and their properties. The government faces challenges in addressing these issues and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
