Unravelling the Mystery of Suicides Among Hindu Police and Army Officers in Bangladesh.

Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi | May 9, 2025:: A string of mysterious deaths has been unfolding in Bangladesh, leaving the minority Hindu community in a state of distress and insecurity. Between January and May 2025, at least five Hindu police and army officers have died under suspicious circumstances, with authorities attributing the deaths to suicides.

Although the authorities are trying to pass off these suspicious deaths as suicides, the question has suddenly arisen as to why this so-called suicide procession. The answer is elusive. But it is difficult to clarify whether the mental pressure, harassment and humiliation on Hindu officers during the interim Yunus government in Bangladesh are the reason for these suicides. Earlier, during the Yunus era, there was a wave of Hindu teachers being harassed and their resignations. Repression upon minority Hindu officials  is all time high in Bangladesh under the high hands of the Islamic radicals inside the Governments and in  its political wings.

The Victims

– Trishna Biswas: Female Constable from Patuakhali, found hanging in police barracks on January 19, 2025. Relatives claimed she was healthy, contradicting the police’s suicide theory.
– Rumpa Das: Female Constable from Bandarban, found hanging in her rented house on February 17, 2025. Police suspect suicide, but the family hasn’t commented.
– Anupam Kumar Ghosh: Constable from Satkhira, found dead with a towel wrapped around his neck on February 16, 2025. Police believe it was a suicide.
– Corporal Durjoy Shil Dilip: Bangladesh Army member, found hanging in Banani Cantonment on April 21, 2025. Authorities suspect suicide.
– ASP Palash Saha: Police Officer from Chittagong, found with a bullet wound on May 7, 2025. Police claim it was a suicide, citing a note found at the scene.

Questions and Concerns

The series of deaths has raised several questions about the treatment of minority groups in Bangladesh. The Hindu community is demanding a thorough investigation, impartial trial, and justice for the victims. The silence of the Yunus government on these incidents has put minority Hindus in a state of insecurity.

Possible Reasons Behind the Suicides

Some possible reasons behind these incidents could be:
– Mental Pressure: The interim Yunus government in Bangladesh has been accused of systematic persecution against minority communities, which might be taking a toll on Hindu officers apprehending any suspension from duties.
– Harassment and Humiliation: There were reports of Hindu teachers being harassed and forced to resign during the Yunus era, which could be a contributing factor to the mental pressure on Hindu officers.
– Insecurity and Persecution: India has expressed deep concern over the abduction and murder of a Hindu minority leader in Bangladesh, criticizing the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government for a “pattern of systematic persecution” against minority communities.

Background of Tension

Bangladesh has a history of violence and human rights abuses, particularly during student-led protests in 2024. Former police officers have been arrested for committing atrocities during these protests. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed concerns about the use of force by security personnel.

Demands for Investigation

Hindu Rights Forums in Bangladesh are demanding a truthful investigation and justice for the victims. The community is questioning whether being a minority means being insecure or just being a number. The demand for a proper investigation is echoed in the slogan: “Let no more Trishna, Rumpa, Anupam, Durjoy or Palash be buried in the story of suicide.”

Given the complexities and concerns surrounding these incidents, a transparent and thorough investigation is crucial to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.

Such row of ‘Suicide’ of the Bangladesh Police and Army personnel in just five months of the current year is nit just alarming, its fearful to the Hindu minorities of Bangladesh.
