Ruparashree Maity | HENB | Kolkata | May 21, 2025:: A recent report by a probe committee constituted by the Calcutta High Court has exposed a disturbing pattern of violence and intimidation in Murshidabad, West Bengal. The committee’s findings reveal that the attacks, which occurred last month, were specifically targeted towards Hindus, with local Trinamool Congress leader Mehboob Alam allegedly playing a key role in the violence during the Waqf agitation escalated in Murshidabad that occurred last month.

According to the report, the violence began on April 11, when Mehboob Alam, a local councillor, arrived with a group of miscreants, leading to widespread destruction of property and livelihoods. The attackers, many of whom were masked, set ablaze homes, shops, and temples, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake.

The report highlights the inaction of the local police, who failed to respond to distress calls from the beleaguered residents. “The villagers of Betbona telephoned, but the West Bengal Police did not respond,” the report notes, underscoring the sense of abandonment and fear that gripped the affected communities.

The committee’s investigation has also revealed the extent of the destruction, with 113 houses severely damaged in Betbona village alone. The report describes the homes as being “destroyed and not habitable without thorough reconstruction,” leaving many families without shelter or livelihoods.

The report notes that the attacks were not limited to homes but also targeted shops, markets, and temples, with 29 shops affected in Ghoshpara, Murshidabad.  Another Muslim boy was also died during the Waqf agitation affected the Murshidabad district in a large scale of violence.

The report further alleges that the attackers cut off water connections to prevent firefighting efforts and that the MLA was present during the vandalism but did nothing to stop it. The committee’s investigation has revealed a disturbing pattern of violence and intimidation, with the local administration seemingly unable or unwilling to intervene.
