B Upendran | HENB | Mysuru | June 18, 2025:: A group of protesters, led by the Smashana Horata Samithi, gathered outside the Nellihudikeri gram panchayat in Madikeri, demanding a crematorium for the Hindu community. The demonstrators, who numbered in the hundreds, displayed a mock corpse to emphasize the urgency of their demand.
Difficulties Faced by Residents
The protesters highlighted that over 6,000 Hindu residents within the panchayat limits face significant difficulties due to the poor condition of the current graveyard near River Cauvery. PR Bharat, a key figure in the Samithi, noted that the community has been struggling for seven months to secure a permanent cemetery site.
Unfulfilled Promises
Bharat alleged that authorities have made unfulfilled promises regarding land identification for the crematorium. Despite submitting requests to reclaim encroached cemetery land, the gram panchayat has remained unresponsive. “We have been knocking on the doors of the authorities for months, but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” Bharat said.
Opposition and Challenges
While the panchayat has designated land for a crematorium, some residents have opposed its establishment, citing proximity to the village temple. However, Bharat countered that private landowners are objecting to the graveyard, and insisted that it should be established at the previously identified location.
Warning of Intensified Protest
The protesters submitted their demands to panchayat development officer Narayanaswamy and warned of intensifying the protest if their demands aren’t met. “We will not back down until our demands are met,” Bharat cautioned. “We will take our struggle to the next level if necessary.”
A Community in Need
The protesters’ demands highlight the need for a timely resolution to address the concerns of the Hindu community in Madikeri. As the situation stands, the community continues to face significant difficulties in performing their last rites with dignity. The outcome of this protest remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the community will not rest until their demands are met.
