Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi | June 27, 2025:: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has renewed its demand for removing the terms “socialist” and “secular” from the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale argued that these words were inserted during the Emergency period and were not part of the original Constitution drafted by B.R. Ambedkar.

A Call for Review

Addressing an event commemorating the Emergency in Delhi, Hosabale questioned the relevance of these words in the Preamble. “The preamble is eternal. Are the thoughts of socialism as an ideology eternal for India?” he asked. He emphasized that the RSS wants a thorough review of these terms and their potential removal from the Constitution. Union Minister Nitin Gadgadi also participated in the event.

Condemning the Emergency

Hosabale and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari strongly condemned the Congress party for its role during the Emergency. They highlighted the atrocities committed during this period, including the suspension of fundamental rights, curtailment of judiciary and media freedom, and large-scale forced sterilization. “Those who did such things are today roaming around with the Constitution’s copy. They have still not apologized… Apologize,” Hosabale said.

Demand for Hindu Rashtra

Some Hindutva proponents, like Puri Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati (Govardhan Peeth), Dr. Pravin Togadia (AntarRashtriya Hindu Parishad), and Upananda Brahmachari (Hindu Existence Forum), along with the leaders of the Hindu Mahasabha, have been demanding the removal of the “illegal insertion” of the words ‘Secular’ and ‘Socialist’ from the Indian Constitution in order to declare India as a Cultural-Constitutional-Sovereign Hindu Rashtra.

In a tweet, Upananda Brahmachari supported the RSS’s demand to remove the words ‘Secular’ and ‘Socialist’ from the Indian Constitution and demanded the replacement of the word ‘Secular’ with ‘Hindu’ and ‘Socialist’ with ‘Humanist’.

India must be declared as a Hindu Rashtra to dismantle the program of making India an Islamic state. India must be declared as a Cultural-Constitutional and Sovereign Hindu Rashtra without any delay.

Congress Slams RSS and BJP Over Constitution Remarks

However, the Congress party has criticized the RSS and BJP, accusing them of plotting against the Constitution. In a post on X, the party stated that the RSS-BJP’s ideology is in direct opposition to the Indian Constitution. The criticism follows RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale’s call to remove the words “socialist” and “secular” from the Preamble.
