3 Hindu Indians abducted in Mali by Jihadi Terror Group, India asks West African nation to secure their safe release.

Upendra Bharti | HENB | New Delhi | July 3, 2025:: India has expressed deep concern over the abduction of three Indian nationals in Mali, a West African country, amid a surge in terrorist attacks. The incident occurred on July 1, when armed assailants launched a coordinated attack on the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, where the Indians were employed.

Details of the Abduction

-Three Indian nationals were taken hostage during the attack. An independent source suggests that a jihadi terror group abducted three Hindu Indians after verifying their religious identities. Al-Qaeda affiliate Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) claimed responsibility for coordinated attacks across Mali on July 2, although it’s unclear if they’re directly linked to the abduction.

Government Response

 The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has condemned the abduction as a “deplorable act of violence”. India has urged the Mali government to take all necessary measures to secure the safe and expeditious release of the abducted nationals. The Indian embassy in Bamako is in close communication with local authorities, law enforcement agencies, and the factory management to facilitate the safe release of the abducted individuals .

Safety Advisory

The MEA has advised all Indians residing in Mali to exercise utmost caution and remain vigilant. Indians in Mali are advised to stay in close contact with the Indian embassy in Bamako for regular updates and necessary assistance.

Prime Minister’s Visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently in Ghana, West Africa, to receive the country’s national honor, ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’. The abduction has been claimed as a “slap to India’s face” by the terror group, amid PM Modi’s visit to West Africa.
