Muharram Mayhem: Open Swords Wielded Jihadis at Sealdah Railway Station, Several Injured.

Jihadi hooliganism with open swords on platforms of Sealdah station during Muharram injured several Hindus. 

Sankirtan Das | HENB | Kolkata | July 5, 2025:: A disturbing incident unfolded at Sealdah station on July 5, 2025, when a Muharram procession turned violent, resulting in injuries. According to eyewitnesses, a group of individuals wielded open swords, causing panic among passengers.

Incidentally, this Muharram mayhem took place on the very day of ‘Ulto Rath Yatra’ (Back Chariot Festival) when huge numbers of Bengali Hindus neighbouring districts usually come to Kolkata to witness the Ulto Rath Yatra held in various places in the city.

Today at 12 noon, the down Naihati local reached platform number 3 of Sealdah station. That train was given to the up Krishnanagar local. One daily passenger was in the last compartment of the Naihati local. Seeing the situation, he got down at Sealdah and saw platform number 3 was crowded with people. According to that eyewitness, countless Muslims had gathered on the occasion of Muharram, who would catch the Krishnanagar local. Suddenly, the daily commuters and passengers there started running and shouting. There was a big push in the crowd. Several boys in Muharram attire were running with open swords in their hands. Suddenly, a boy almost fainted, holding his head and falling onto the platform. A few more were running frantically to escape the sword.

There were several frightened women and children among the crowd. The injured boy’s head was fractured, and blood was coming out. A woman immediately started pouring water from a water bottle on his head. Gradually, that part of the platform was also covered in blood. Several other passengers were also injured.  All of them were Hindus.

The frantic Muslim boys had come to catch that Krishnanagar local. But as a result of the open sword being swung in the crowd, it hit him directly on the head. Meanwhile, several daily passengers ran to the GRP. Due to everyone’s collective protest, a few Government Railway Protection Force (GRPF) officers were forced to intervene despite their initial hesitation. The Musim boys came to catch the Krishnanagar local train standing on platform number 3. The passengers showed them which compartments they had boarded. The GRPF  brought down a few swords from the compartments. At that moment, the passengers inside the train were also shouting in panic, ‘Sir, come this way, there are more swords under the seats, look sir.’

Despite their annoyance and the GRPF’s slow action, they recovered four or five swords that were shown to them and ordered the train to leave without delay. When the train was leaving, everyone present on the platform and the passengers inside the train were shouting, ‘Stop the train, there are more swords inside, something serious could happen later.’ But the train did not stop.

This is the regular picture in Sealdah and Howrah stations every year during Muharram days. The Railway Ministry and the GRP have no concern for the passengers’ safety and security during Muharram days. This Islamic hooliganism in crowded places and even in railway stations is increasing day by day. This should be stopped immediately. The railway authority must stop carrying swords and weapons at any cost by any passenger or mob in any religious function. If such an incident happens in that station, where is the safety of ordinary passengers? Today, the Jihadi-minded people are wielding open swords in Muharram; tomorrow, they will shoot; the day after tomorrow, bombs and gunpowder or something more terrifying – then with what assurance of safety for the railway passengers?

A high-level probe must be initiated by the railway authorities to reveal the actualities of Muharram hooliganism in Sealdah and Howrah division and to stop such menace, prioritizing the safety and security of passengers.

Everything was captured on CCTV. With CCTV footage available, the investigation can likely identify the individuals involved in the incident and take appropriate action. The footage can serve as valuable evidence in determining the sequence of events and assigning responsibility.
