Minority Communities in Bangladesh Face Wave of Violence: 2,442 Incidents Reported in 11 Months.

Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council claims:

About 2,500 incidents of violence against minorities in last 11 months in the country.

Shubhro Basak | HENB | Dhaka | July 10, 2025:: The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has reported a disturbing trend of violence against religious and ethnic minorities in the country, with 2,442 incidents recorded between August 4, 2024, and June 30, 2025. The majority of these incidents occurred in the first few weeks after the fall of the Awami League government and the expulsion of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from the country.

Breakdown of Incidents
– 2,100 incidents reported between August 4 and August 20, 2024: This period saw the highest number of violent incidents, including murders, torture, rape, and gang rape.
– 132 incidents reported between August 21 and December 31, 2024: The number of incidents decreased in the latter part of 2024, but still remained significant.
– 258 new incidents reported between January 1 and June 30, 2025: Unfortunately, the violence continued into 2025, with minority communities facing ongoing persecution.

Nature of Violence
The incidents of violence include:
– Murder
– Torture
– Rape and gang rape
– Vandalism of places of worship
– Forced occupation of homes and businesses
– Attacks on small communities

These were revealed by the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (Bangladesh Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad) in a press conference held at the Abdus Salam Auditorium of the National Press Club in Dhaka on July 10, 2025, where council leaders, including Nirmal Rosario, Manindra Kumar Nath, Kajal Debnath, JL Bhowmik, Dipankar Ghosh, and Palash Kanti Dey, were present.

Lack of Government Action
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has criticized the interim government for failing to take adequate action against the perpetrators of violence. According to Nirmal Rosario, one of the presidents of the Unity Council, the government’s reform activities are being carried out without the participation of minorities, which is a major disappointment for the community ² ¹.

Demand for Minority Commission
The council has demanded the formation of a separate minority commission to identify the ongoing discrimination and oppression against minorities and recommend steps to end it. However, despite repeated requests, no such commission has been formed, and minority representatives have been excluded from the existing reform commissions.

Rights and Safety of Minority Communities

The situation highlights the need for urgent attention to protect the rights and safety of minority communities in Bangladesh. The government needs to take immediate action to address these concerns and ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their religious or ethnic background.

According to multiple sources, minority Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians in Bangladesh are facing ruthless persecution at the hands of Islamists under the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus.
