Khalistani Group Threatens Kapil Sharma After Attack on Kap’s Cafe On Hindutva Issues.

Canada Not Your Playground’: Khalistani Separatist Threatens Kapil Sharma Over Hindutva Allegations.

Udita Saxena | HEN | New Delhi | July 12, 2025:: A violent incident unfolded in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, where Kapil Sharma’s newly opened restaurant, Kap’s Cafe, was attacked by unknown assailants. It had been attacked — allegedly by Khalistani terrorist Harjit Singh Laddi, an operative of the banned terror group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).

The Attack

On July 9-10, 2025, Kap’s Cafe came under attack, with gunmen firing at least nine shots at the premises. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating the attack, treating it as a terror-related incident.

Details of the Attack

The cafe, co-managed by Sharma’s wife Ginni Chatrath, had barely opened its doors before it was riddled with bullets. The aesthetically designed café, known for its warm vibe and celebrity charm, had been drawing social media buzz. Laddi claimed responsibility for the shooting, allegedly in response to remarks made by Sharma.

Threat from Khalistani Separatist

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, founder of the banned Pro-Khalistan separatist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), issued a threat against Kapil Sharma, accusing him of promoting “violent Hindutva ideology” through his business in Canada. In a video message, Pannun warned Sharma to “take his blood money back to Hindustan,” asserting that Canada won’t allow Hindutva ideology to take root on its soil.

Kapil Sharma’s Response

Kapil Sharma chose not to dwell on fear, instead focusing on his Netflix show. In an Instagram post, he teased an episode packed with laughter, music, and global glamour, featuring Vijay Varma, Jaideep Ahlawat, Pratik Gandhi, Jitendra Kumar, and K-pop star Jackson Wang.

Kap’s Cafe’s Message

Kap’s Café released an emotional note on Instagram, describing the incident as “heartbreaking” and expressing shock at the violence. The team thanked the local police in Surrey for their swift response and the community for their support, promising to continue spreading joy and coffee without fear.

Security Measures

The RCMP has increased security around Kap’s Cafe. In India, Mumbai Police increased security at Kapil Sharma’s Oshiwara residence, underlining the seriousness of the threat.

Background on SFJ and Pannun

The SFJ is a banned organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for engaging in anti-national activities. Pannun was declared an “individual terrorist” by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs in 2019.

Investigation and Response

The incident has strained India-Canada relations, particularly after Canada accused Indian agents of involvement in the 2023 killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Indo-Canadian community leaders and politicians have spoken out against the attack.

Reactions of GOI

The Indian government has taken the incident seriously, with the Ministry of External Affairs likely to raise concerns with Canadian authorities regarding the safety of Indian nationals and the growing presence of Khalistani separatist groups in Canada. This incident has strained India-Canada relations, particularly after Canada accused Indian agents of involvement in the 2023 killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a claim India denies.

In response to the attack, the Mumbai Police have increased security at Kapil Sharma’s Oshiwara residence, highlighting the government’s concern for his safety. The Indian government has long pressed Canada to crack down on Khalistani groups operating on its soil, and this incident may further escalate diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

The government’s stance on Khalistani separatism remains firm, with the Ministry of Home Affairs declaring Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the founder of Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), an “individual terrorist” in 2019. SFJ’s activities have been deemed prejudicial to India’s internal security and integrity, leading to its ban under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
