The accused, identified as Matloob Alam, allegedly used the alias “Rajiv” to gain the trust of the woman, Shalini Prajapati, and her family.

The Temple Priest’s Suspicion

The chief priest of the Belha Mai temple, Mangala Prasad, grew suspicious when he noticed that the man was struggling to perform Hindu rituals during the wedding ceremony. Prasad’s doubts were further fueled when he asked the couple about their identities, and the man introduced himself as “Rajiv,” a resident of Malaka, Prayagraj. Secretly the priest informed the matter to the local police.

The Arrest

When the police asked Alam for his Aadhaar card, he revealed his true identity, sparking a thorough investigation. Shalini claimed that Alam had assured her that he would not force her to convert to Islam, but she later alleged that he had been pressuring her to do so. When the woman was asked, she said that he was marrying her in the temple with no intention of forcibly converting her religion to Islam, police said. The police have registered a case against Alam under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act and relevant sections related to kidnapping and forcing someone to marry.

The incident sparked a furor among Hindu organizations including  Hindu Raksha Sena, with members gathering at the temple and demanding action against Alam. The police have taken measures to maintain law and order, and the investigation is ongoing.

The police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the attempted marriage and whether Alam had any accomplices. The authorities are also providing support to Shalini, who is shaken by the experience. A significant foreign funding trail of over 100 crores from Gulf nations has also been discovered, funneled through shell accounts and fake NGOs.
