Shivraj Chouhan’s Counter: Hindutva’s Ahimsa vs Nehru’s ‘Hindi Chini’ Legacy.

Hindutva teaches ahimsa, not weakness: Shivraj Chouhan’s ‘Hindi Chini’ dig at Nehru.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took a veiled dig at the ‘Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai’ catchphrase popularised by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the years leading to India’s 1962 war with China, stating that the non-violence practised in Hindutva does not imply weakness.

In Short

  • Hindutva is a way of life rooted in Bharat’s soil and water, says Shivraj Chouhan
  • Non-violence in Hindutva requires strength, not weakness, he emphasises
  • India must be strong and self-reliant to truly practise non-violence, he says

Sayan Ganguly | NDTV | New Delhi | July 19, 2025:: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Hindutva is deeply ingrained in Bharat’s soil and water, as it is a way of life that believes in universal love and non-violence. Chouhan took a veiled dig at the ‘Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai’ catchphrase popularised by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the years leading to India’s 1962 war with China, stating that the non-violence practised in Hindutva does not imply weakness.

In an exclusive interview with India Today TV’s Executive Editor Preeti Choudhary, the Union Minister said, “We believe in non-violence, but that is only possible with strength. If we keep on saying ‘Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai’ and China comes and captures your land, this is called weakness.”

Chouhan pointed out that Hindutva seeks happiness and well-being for all, which is reflected in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.” However, he added that while Hindutva wishes good for everyone, it does not extend that goodwill to those who seek to harm the country.

“PM Modi has shown the way — if anyone raises a finger at India, we will not let them go… Surgical strikes, air strikes, Operation Sindoor — without such actions, India would cease to exist,” he said.

Chouhan stressed that it is very important for India to be strong and self-reliant in order for it to practice and preach non-violence to the world.

The senior BJP leader also said that the core principle of Hindutva is based on sarva dharma sambhava (equal respect for all religions). “We have imbibed this in Bharat’s soil and water… we love everyone,” he added.
