The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has long been associated with the ideology of Hindutva, a term that encapsulates the cultural, political, and social aspirations of Hindu nationalism. Within the party, several leaders have emerged as prominent faces of this ideology, shaping its narrative and influencing its policies. Among these, three chief ministers have gained particular attention for their strong Hindutva credentials: Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh, Pushkar Singh Dhami of Uttarakhand, and Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam. These leaders have become the poster boys of Hindutva within the BJP, each contributing in their unique way to the party’s agenda.

Unlike Prime Minister Modi’s approach to “Pasmanda Triptikaran” (Muslim appeasement through schemes exclusively for Muslims), Yogi, Dhami, and Sarma have endeavored to curb Muslim vote bank politics by providing equal opportunities to Hindus.

Due to his perceived pro-Muslim stance and policies that some consider unfavorable to Hindutva ideology and interest, Prime Minister Modi is no longer viewed by many as a Hindutva poster boy. Furthermore, Modi has faced criticism for allegedly making false election promises and engaging in irresponsible credit hunting.

 Yogi Adityanath: The Firebrand Monk-Politician and “Bulldozer Baba”

Yogi Adityanath, the current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, is perhaps one of the most well-known faces of Hindutva politics in India today. A monk by vocation and a politician by profession, Yogi has been a polarizing figure, known for his fiery speeches and strong stance on issues related to Hindu identity. As the head of the Gorakhnath Math, a prominent Hindu monastery, Yogi brings a religious authority to his political role, which has been a significant factor in his rise within the BJP.

Yogi’s tenure has been marked by several notable initiatives that reflect the BJP’s Hindutva agenda. One of his most significant actions has been the demolition of illegal encroachments, particularly those associated with anti-Hindu rioters and goons, earning him the moniker “Bulldozer Baba.” This strong stance on law and order, coupled with his commitment to Hindu cultural heritage, has resonated with a large section of the population.

Another notable achievement under Yogi’s leadership was the successful organization of the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, which was seen as a grand celebration of Hindu solidarity and culture. The event drew millions of devotees and showcased the state’s rich cultural heritage, further solidifying Yogi’s image as a champion of Hindutva.

Pushkar Singh Dhami: The Reformer and Protector of Hindu Interests

Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, has been another key figure in advancing the Hindutva agenda within the BJP. Dhami’s leadership has been characterized by his commitment to reforming Madrasa education through the Uttarakhand Minority Educational Institutions Bill. This move is seen as a step towards integrating Madrasa education with the mainstream curriculum, ensuring that students from these institutions have better opportunities for growth and development.

Dhami has also been vocal about protecting Hindu interests in the state, particularly in the context of issues like ‘Love Jihad,’ ‘Land Jihad,’ and ‘Thook Jihad.’ His government has taken several measures to address these concerns, including the implementation of laws to prevent forced conversions and protect the rights of Hindu youth. These initiatives have been seen as crucial in safeguarding Hindu cultural and social values in Uttarakhand.

Himanta Biswa Sarma: The Guardian Against Infiltration and Madrasa Jihad

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, has been a key strategist in the BJP’s efforts to consolidate Hindu votes in the northeastern state. Sarma’s shift from the Congress to the BJP was seen as a significant move, given his influence in Assamese politics. As a leader, Sarma has been instrumental in shaping the BJP’s narrative in Assam, focusing on issues like citizenship, demographic change, and cultural preservation, all through the lens of Hindutva.

One of Sarma’s critical initiatives has been to address the issue of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Assam. His government has taken steps to identify and deport these individuals, ensuring that the state’s demographic balance is not disrupted. Sarma has also been proactive in tackling Madrasa Jihad, ensuring that educational institutions in the state adhere to the national curriculum and do not promote any form of radicalization.

New Road Ahead

Yogi Adityanath, Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Himanta Biswa Sarma represent the new wave of Hindutva leadership within the BJP. Each of these leaders has contributed to the party’s agenda in their unique way, whether through cultural initiatives, legal reforms, or strategic political maneuvering. As the BJP continues to shape its political narrative around Hindutva, these leaders are likely to play a crucial role in defining the party’s direction and influence in Indian politics. Their prominence as poster boys of Hindutva not only reflects the ideological leanings of the BJP but also highlights the evolving nature of Hindu nationalism in contemporary India.

The future of Hindutva politics within the BJP appears to rest in the hands of leaders like Yogi Adityanath, Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Himanta Biswa Sarma, rather than with Narendra Modi. A new path forward should be led by these three, along with other BJP leaders who prioritize Hindu interests and reject Muslim appeasement.
