The recent remarks by Madhya Pradesh Congress leader Umang Singhar, stating that Adivasis are not Hindus, have exposed the party’s attempt to alienate the Adivasi community from their Sanatani Hindu roots. This move appears to be a calculated effort to create divisions and undermine the cultural identity of Adivasis.
The Controversy
Singhar, a four-time Congress MLA, made the remarks while addressing a meeting of the Madhya Pradesh Adivasi Vikas Parishad. He emphasized that Adivasis should take pride in their tribal identity and not be referred to as Hindus. Singhar cited the example of Shabari, who fed Lord Ram, and said she too was an Adivasi.
Addressing events in Chhindwara, including a meeting of the Tribal Development Council and the National Karamdar Puja programme, Congress leader Umang Singhar criticized the BJP and RSS for attempting to impose a Hindu identity on tribal communities. ‘I have consistently stated that tribals are not Hindus,’ Singhar said. ‘This reflects my belief and the sentiment of the tribal society. We have our distinct customs, culture, and way of life. If we worship crops, trees, and nature, why should the BJP object to this?

Congress’s Hidden Agenda
Singhar’s comments seem to be part of a larger strategy to create a narrative that Adivasis are distinct from Hindus. This narrative could potentially be used to justify special treatment or separate policies for Adivasis, furthering the Congress party’s vote bank politics.
Singhar’s Defense
Singhar has defended his remarks, accusing the BJP of diverting from real issues. He emphasized that the tribal community has its own traditions and culture, just like other communities such as Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. Singhar questioned why the BJP is trying to include Adivasis into Hinduism and pointed out that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has never appointed an Adivasi as its Sarsanghchalak.
BJP’s Stand
The BJP has strongly criticized Singhar’s remarks, with Chief Minister Mohan Yadav calling them “shameful.” The party has emphasized that Adivasis are an integral part of the Hindu society and that their culture and traditions are deeply rooted in Sanatani Hindu values. Yadav accused the Congress party of working against Hindus and Hindutva, and said that people will not forgive such statements. BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma also criticized Singhar, accusing him of trying to convert tribals to Christianity to please Sonia Gandhi.
Adivasis and Sanatani Hindu Faith
Adivasis have always been an integral part of the Hindu society, with their own unique traditions and practices. The BJP’s stance reflects the view that Adivasis are not separate from Hindus, but rather an essential part of the larger Hindu community.
Implications
The controversy has significant implications for the upcoming Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, where tribals constitute a decisive vote bank. The BJP’s reaction to Singhar’s remarks may be seen as an attempt to consolidate Hindu votes, while the Congress party may try to consolidate tribal support by emphasizing their distinct cultural identity.
The Congress party’s attempt to alienate Adivasis from their Sanatani Hindu roots is a concerning development. The BJP’s strong stance on this issue highlights the importance of preserving the cultural identity of Adivasis and promoting national unity.
