Nepal’s Gen Z Unrest: The Deep State and Hindu Rashtra at Crossroads.

Complex Dynamics in Nepal: Deep State, Hindu Rashtra, and the Future of Governance.

Upananda Brahmachari

After the furious Gen Z movement, Nepal is currently apprehending  a complex web of internal and external influences, with the Hindutva movement likely to gain a new momentum amidst growing tensions between pro-Hindu groups and the government. The country’s strategic location between India and China makes it a focal point for regional power dynamics, potentially influencing internal politics and social movements.

Though the Gen Z movement erupted against the corrupt Communist regime under the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), it has sparked a huge backlash, enabling them to divert from the Hindu Rashtra direction.

The Rise of Hindutva and Demand for Hindu Rashtra in Nepal

The Hindutva movement in Nepal is gaining traction, with pro-Hindu sentiments sometimes spilling into real-world violence. This movement is influenced by its Indian counterparts, with some Nepali parties seeking to establish a Hindu state. Recently, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal (RPPN) has led a significant number of people in demanding a Hindu Rashtra, along with the revival of Nepal’s Hindu kingdom.

Though the Deep State, European Union, Chinese coterie, Christian forces, and Islamist powers around Nepal may not allow the rise of the Hindu Rashtra Movement, the majority of people support traditional monarchy and Hindu Rashtra in Nepal as a popular demand.

However, the restoration of a Hindu state or monarchy is not currently a realistic possibility in Nepal’s future politics, unless the Hindu Rashtra Movement in Nepal escalates once again.

The Gen Z Movement: Implications and Consequences

The Gen Z movement in Nepal has led to significant implications, including:
– Death Toll: The protests have resulted in a reported 30-34 deaths, with many more injured. Hospitals across the country have been overwhelmed with casualties, and the death toll continues to rise.
– Loss of Progress: The unrest has led to significant damage to state institutions, including the Parliament building, the Supreme Court, and various government offices. This destruction will likely set back Nepal’s progress and development.
– Uncertainty and Unrest: The movement has created uncertainty and unrest in the country, with many questioning the government’s ability to maintain law and order.

Foreign Influence and Geopolitical Rivalries

Nepal’s politics are also shaped by foreign influences, with both India and China vying for power in the region. Allegations of BJP’s influence on Nepali politics exist, while China’s growing presence in Nepal potentially counters India’s efforts. This geopolitical rivalry may impact Nepal’s internal politics and social movements.

Anti-Corruption Agitation and the Deep State

Recent anti-corruption movements in Nepal have led to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, a communist leader. While there are predictable links between anti-corruption agitation and the deep state targeting the Hindutva movement, Nepal’s complex dynamics make it challenging to assume the future of governance.

Role of George Soros in the current Nepal situation

Critics are pointing fingers at George Soros, alleging his involvement in Nepal’s current developments, particularly the recent protests and government collapse. While there’s no concrete evidence to prove Soros’ direct involvement, some facts are worth noting :

– Soros-Backed Institute’s Report: The Open Society Foundations, headed by George Soros, has a branch in Kathmandu. This presence might have contributed to the allegations of his involvement in Nepal’s internal affairs. Again, the V-Dem Institute, backed by George Soros, released a 2025 Democracy Report ranking Nepal higher than India in terms of democratic status. This report has sparked controversy and debate.

– USAID and Soros-Linked Funding: A recent scandal revealed that USAID secretly funneled $33 million into federalism projects in Nepal through irregular agreements. The Niti Foundation, an NGO seeded with money from Soros’ Open Society Foundations, was involved in these projects.

– Nepal’s Protests and Government Collapse: The recent protests, led by Gen Z, were sparked by corruption and nepotism allegations. The government responded with censorship, but it only fueled the protests, ultimately leading to the prime minister’s resignation.

– Concerns about Foreign Interference: Nepal’s strategic location between India and China makes it a focal point for regional power dynamics. Foreign influence, including from organizations like Soros’, might be perceived as a threat to Nepal’s sovereignty.

New Leadership and the Future of Nepal

The public’s attention is now focused on new leadership, with Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah emerging as a potential prime minister. Shah’s anti-India stance and advocacy for stopping the screening of Indian films in Nepal have garnered significant public support, especially among the youth. However, his rise may also be influenced by external forces, potentially shaping Nepal’s future governance.

A Balanced Approach to Governance

Nepal’s current situation is marked by complex dynamics, with multiple factors influencing its politics and social movements. While the deep state may be active in shaping Nepal’s governance, it is difficult to predict the future of the Hindutva movement and the country’s direction. One thing is clear, however: Nepal is in a transition phase, and its future governance will likely be shaped by a combination of internal and external factors.

The public opinion in Nepal seems to be shifting towards a balanced approach, with some supporting ex-Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the interim chief of the Gen Z movement-affected Nepal. This could hint at a Nepal free from communist monopoly, giving space to pro-monarchy and pro-Hindu Rashtra people.
