Hindutva Groups Clash with Screening of Marathi Film “Manache Shlok”.

Hindutva groups led by HJS halt screening of Marathi film ‘Manache Shlok’ in Pune, alleging insult to Saint Samarth Ramdas.

Upendra Bhari | HENB | Mumbai | Oct 11, 2025:: – A contentious debate surrounding artistic freedom and cultural sensitivity has erupted in Pune over the Marathi commercial film “Manache Shlok,” directed by Mrunmayee Deshpande. The film, released statewide on October 10, 2025, has been embroiled in controversy due to its title, which is allegedly using the revered scripture “Manache Shlok” by Saint Samarth Ramdas.

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), a right-wing organization, had filed a petition in the High Court, alleging that the film’s title offended Hindu beliefs and disrespected the saint’s teachings. Despite the court’s clearance for the film’s release, HJS members and other right-wing groups continued their protests, storming a theater in Kothrud and forcibly stopping the show.

The controversy began when the film’s trailer was released, with objections raised over the use of the title “Manache Shlok,” which is also the name of a holy book composed by  Samarth Ramdas Swamy. Critics argued that the film’s theme, which explores live-in relationships, was at odds with the revered scripture’s message of dharma, self-discipline, and devotion.

Sunil Ghanwat, convener of the HJS for Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, condemned the film, stating that turning the revered scripture into a tool for profit and entertainment was unacceptable and hurt the sentiments of millions of Hindus. The organization demanded an immediate change of the film’s title.

The protests led to the cancellation of screenings across Pune, with theater managements citing precautionary measures. Police were deployed at multiple theaters to prevent any untoward incidents. Despite the High Court’s refusal to stay the film’s release, the HJS and other right-wing groups persisted in their protests, leading to a standoff between the filmmakers and the protesters.

The incident has sparked a heated debate about the limits of artistic freedom and the importance of respecting cultural values. While the filmmakers have not issued an official statement, the controversy has raised questions about the future of creative expression in the state.

The Pune police have confirmed that no screenings of the movie took place at the City Pride theater in Kothrud on Saturday, citing concerns over potential law and order issues. As the situation stands, the film’s future release in Maharashtra remains uncertain, with the HJS vowing to continue their protests until their demands are met.
