Manideepa Chetri | HENB | Nepal | Oct 14, 2025:: In a somber development that cast a shadow over a landmark Gaza peace deal, the body of Bipin Joshi, a 23-year-old Nepalese Hindu student, has been returned to Israel after being held hostage by Hamas for over two years. Joshi’s death was confirmed by Nepal’s Ambassador to Israel, Dhan Prasad Pandit, who stated that the student’s remains were en route to Tel Aviv late Monday night.
According to Israel Times, the bodies of the four hostages Hamas returned to Israel last night (13.10.2025) have been identified by forensic experts, and their families have been notified, the military says.
The IDF says its representatives notified the families of Guy Illouz, 26, Nepal national Bipin Joshi, 23, and two other hostages whose names will be published later, that their bodies were returned.
Hamas yesterday said it had also returned the bodies of Yossi Sharabi and IDF officer Cpt. Daniel Perez.
DNA testing will be conducted before the remains are repatriated to Nepal, with final rites to be performed in Israel in coordination with the Nepali embassy.
Joshi’s ordeal began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing over 1,200 people and kidnapping 251 others. The young student, who had traveled from Nepal to participate in an agricultural study and work program at Kibbutz Alumim near the Gaza border, was among those captured.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that Joshi displayed immense bravery during the attack, saving the lives of his fellow students by grabbing a live grenade and throwing it out of the bomb shelter where they were hiding. He was subsequently captured by Hamas gunmen and taken into Gaza.
In the months that followed, Joshi’s family campaigned tirelessly for his release, traveling to Kathmandu, Israel, and the United States to lobby officials and raise awareness about their son’s plight. His mother and sister even met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog as part of a delegation of hostage families.
As news of Joshi’s death spreads, the Nepalese community is in mourning, grieving the loss of a young life cut short by the conflict. Joshi’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the sacrifices made by innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
The Gaza peace deal, brokered by US President Donald Trump, aims to stabilize the region and bring an end to the conflict. However, Joshi’s death is a stark reminder of the deep scars left by the conflict and the challenges that lie ahead in achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
A Timeline of Bipin Joshi’s Story:
– September 2023: Bipin Joshi joins an agricultural study and work program at Kibbutz Alumim near the Gaza border.
– October 7, 2023: Hamas launches a surprise attack on southern Israel, and Joshi is captured by gunmen.
– November 2023: Video footage released by the Israeli military appears to show Joshi being dragged into Gaza’s Shifa Hospital.
– August 2025: Joshi’s family meets with Israeli President Isaac Herzog as part of a delegation of hostage families.
– October 13, 2025: Hamas returns the bodies of four hostages, including Joshi, to Israel.
– October 14, 2025: Joshi’s death is confirmed, and DNA testing is set to be conducted before his remains are repatriated to Nepal.
Nepal is now bearing the brunt of grief as Hamas, a jihadi force, brutally killed Bipin in a bid to expand Palestine and eliminate Israel from the global map.
