Rutgers University Event Sparks Outrage Among Hindu Community.

Anti-Hindu Event at Rutgers Draws Community Outrage, Congressional Concerns and Protest.

Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | Oct 29, 2025:: A recent event at Rutgers University, titled “Hindutva in America: A Threat to Equality and Religious Pluralism,” has drawn widespread criticism from the Hindu community and members of Congress. The event, which featured a panel discussion, was criticized for its perceived anti-Hindu rhetoric and lack of representation from practicing Hindus.

False Claims and Misinformation

The panel discussion was accused of making sweeping claims about Hinduism without including any practicing Hindu voices. The panelists allegedly made false claims, including denying the existence of Hinduphobia and drawing false equivalences between the Nazi Hakenkreuz and the Hindu Swastika and  ignored the recent vandalism of seven Hindu temples in the US. Additionally, the panelists accused Hindu organizations in the US of receiving undisclosed payments from the BJP-led Indian government, implying they are “agents of India.”

Student Protests and Safety Concerns

Despite concerns about potential backlash, a group of brave Hindu students held a silent rally outside the event venue. However, they faced hostility from a supporter of the panelists, who attempted to dox them. The students expressed fear for their safety and anonymity, highlighting the challenges faced by minority communities in speaking out against perceived injustices.

Congressional Concerns and Support

Four members of the US Congress sent a joint letter to the Rutgers University administration, expressing concern over the event and its potential impact on Hindu students. The lawmakers warned that the material presented could “fuel further prejudice” and impact student safety. The four US Congress members includes Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10), Rep. Rich McCormick (GA-7), Rep. Shri Thanedar (MI-13), and Rep. Sanford Bishop Jr. (GA-2).

Community Reaction and Call to Action

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) strongly condemned the event and called on universities nationwide to ensure their campuses remain safe for students of all backgrounds. CoHNA reaffirmed its commitment to free speech and open dialogue while emphasizing the importance of academic responsibility in protecting viewpoint diversity and student safety.

It was an unfortunate event, as the Rutgers University authorities did not consider the 10,000 emails from students, parents, and community members urging the university to disassociate itself from the event. Additionally, CoHNA sent 4,000 emails to state and federal lawmakers and made over 120 calls from CoHNA policy fellows to New Jersey officials to stop the event, but yielded no results.
