Temple Takeover Protest: Devotees and HR&CE Lock Horns in Tamil Nadu.

Villagers led by Hindu Munnai  Protest HR&CE Takeover of Pachaivazhi Amman Temple near Vadalur.

R Hridya | HENB | Cuddalore | Oct 30, 2025:: A heated standoff unfolded in Abatharanapuram village near Vadalur, Tamil Nadu, as villagers and Hindu Munnani members protested the HR&CE Department’s attempt to take over the 600-year-old Pachaivazhi Amman Temple. The renowned temple, known for its annual Theemithi (fire-walking) festival that draws devotees from Abatharanapuram, Vadalur, Serakuppam, Kurinjipadi, Vadakuthu, and surrounding villages. The temple has been under private management.

The controversy began when HR&CE officials received complaints alleging administrative irregularities, prompting them to take temporary control. When Velvizhi, the appointed Thakkar, visited the temple on May 30 to assume charge, the trustees requested 20 days to complete the ongoing Theemithi festival, which was scheduled to end on June 6. However, HR&CE granted only 10 days.

Villagers and Hindu Munnani members protested HR&CE’s tricky takeover of the Pachaivazhi Amman Temple, citing ownership claims and the matter reached to the court.  Despite a pending court case, HR&CE officials attempted to take charge of the temple.

As HR&CE officials and police personnel  arrived on Wednesday to take charge, protesters blocked their entry, leading to a scuffle. The Madras High Court intervened, issuing an interim stay on the takeover. Following the court’s direction, police and HR&CE officials withdrew, and normalcy was restored. The villagers celebrated, with women devotees lighting camphor and praying in gratitude to the adorning deity Pachaivazhi Amman.

A case has been registered against 68 persons, including BJP and Hindu Munnani leaders, for protesting and obstructing officials. The situation highlights the ongoing debate over temple administration and the role of HR&CE in Tamil Nadu. All those detained by police were later released.
