Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | Nov 5, 2025:: US Congressman from Illinois Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) has slammed Vice President JD Vance for his recent comments about his wife Usha’s Hindu background, calling them “deeply disappointing”. The controversy surrounds Vance’s remarks made during a public event at the University of Mississippi, where he expressed hope that his wife would one day convert to Christianity. Critics say it’s a revelation of the ‘Abrahamic mindset of converting others’ anyway.
“At a time when Hindu and Indian-American communities are confronting a climate of rising prejudice, talk of mass deportations, and growing anti-Hindu sentiment even against members of his own party, it’s deeply disappointing that the Vice President would add to that climate through his recent comments while remaining silent in the face of hate,” Krishnamoorthi said in a post on X.

According to reports, Vance told attendees that while his wife Usha has been supportive of his Christian faith, he hopes she will eventually “see things the same way”. Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, described his interfaith marriage as being built on “mutual respect, trust, and communication”.
The comments have sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing Vance of being disrespectful to his wife’s faith and contributing to growing anti-Hindu sentiment in the US. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) has also criticized Vance, questioning why he wouldn’t engage with Hinduism given his wife’s influence on his faith.
With respect @JDVance, if your wife encouraged you to re-engage with your faith, why not reciprocate that and engage with Hinduism too?
If you did you may well learn that Hinduism doesn’t share the need to wish your spouse comes around to see things as you do in terms of… https://t.co/fkQQgclNDl

“We see this as a compulsion from some religious communities to convert others to their way of thinking,” said the HAF. “Such actions are disrespectful and harmful.”
“With respect, @JDVance, if your wife encouraged you to re-engage with your faith, why not reciprocate that and engage with Hinduism too?” the HAF wrote on X.
Canadian journalist Ezra Levant was among those who called Vance’s comments “disgusting”, accusing him of “throwing his wife’s religion under the bus” for acceptance.
In response, Vance defended his position, stating that his Christian faith encourages him to share his beliefs with others. “My wife is the most amazing blessing I have in my life,” he said. “She herself encouraged me to reengage with my faith many years ago.”
Despite Vance’s defense, the controversy highlights the challenges of navigating interfaith relationships in the public eye. As Congressman Krishnamoorthi noted, “At a time when Hindu and Indian-American communities are confronting a climate of rising prejudice… it’s deeply disappointing that the Vice President would add to that climate.”
The incident has sparked a heated debate about faith, tolerance, and the importance of respecting other cultures and beliefs. As the discussion continues, it’s clear that the issue is complex and multifaceted, requiring thoughtful consideration and empathy from all parties involved in the backdrop of growing ‘Hinduphobia’ in the United Sates of America.
