Sankirtan Das | HENB | Kolkata | Nov 30, 2025:: Kolkata is gearing up for a grand celebration of spirituality and culture as the ‘Panch Lokkha Konthe Gita Path’ event is set to take place on December 7, 2025. The event, organized by the 5 Lokkho Konthe Gita Path Committee, an association of Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad, will witness the simultaneous recitation of Bhagavad Gita verses by five lakh devotees at the Brigade Parade Ground. Festoons, hoardings, banners, and posters for the event are now visible everywhere in Kolkata.
Prominent Attendees
The event will be graced by prominent spiritual leaders, including Baba Ramdev, Sadhvi Ritambhara, and Dhirendra Krishna Shastri of Bageshwar Dham. Gita Manishi Maha Mandaleshwar Gyananand and Swami Pradiptananda (Kartik Maharaj) will also attend the event.
Recitation Details
The devotees will recite the first, middle, and last chapters of the Bhagavad Gita, specifically the 1st (Arjun Vishad Yog), 9th (Rajavidya Rajaguhya Yog), and 18th (Moksha Sannyas Yog) chapters. Over 2,000 Sanyasi, Sant, and Mathadhish will also attend the event with their disciples.
Previous Events
Swami Nirgunananda Maharaj of Rishra Prem Mandir highlighted the significance of this event, mentioning previous Gita recitation events. In 2022, a Gita recitation event involving 5,000 people was organized at the ISKCON temple in Mayapur. In 2023, Kolkata witnessed a Gita recitation by 1 lakh devotees in Brigade Parade Ground, attracting 1,25,000 people, including 1,300 Sadhu-Sanyasi-Sant-Mahant. Another Gita recitation was held by 1 lakh people in Siliguri’s Kwakhali ground in 2024.
Preparations and Significance
The Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad arranged a Khuti Puja/Bhoomi Pujan in Brigade Parade Ground on November 30, marking the beginning of the event. A colorful rally of women devotees and others was taken out from Daighat, carrying Ganga water in earthen pots to make the event successful. Mahamandaleshwar Tejasananda Giri of Bhola Giri Sampradaya, Swami Pradiptananda (Kartik Maharaj), and Swami Nirgunananda were present to boost the event.
Increased Demand for Bhagavad Gita Copies
The event has led to a significant increase in the sale of Bhagavad Gita copies in Kolkata. Gita Press’s Kolkata unit reported a three-fold increase in sales, arranging for 2,50,000 Bengali copies and 50,000 Hindi copies to meet the demand.
A Remarkable Event
Swami Nirgunanda Maharaj believes that the Bhagavad Gita recitation with five lakh people at the Brigade Parade Ground will be a remarkable event, unprecedented in any part of the globe. The event is expected to promote spirituality, culture, and unity among the devotees.
VHP’s Relentless Efforts
The VHP’s Sadhu-Sant Co-ordination Unit has been working tirelessly to unite the Sannyasis (Monks) and Mathadhish of different Ashrams and Maths to ensure the grand success of the program. Swami Satyaprakashananda (Prakash Maharaj), Swami Dhyanabratananda (Amar Maharaj), along with Swami Joydevananda and Upananda Brahmachari, have taken charge of this monumental task to foster solidarity among Ashrams and Maths. Their goal is to promote Sanatan Hindu regeneration in Bengal, with the help of the disciples and followers of these Ashrams and Maths, all working in unison.
Various Sant Yatras have been held in different parts of Bengal and are still continuing, culminating in the December 7 Gita Path at Brigade Parade Grounds. Although most devotees will reach the venue on their own arrangements, a massive logistics operation has been set up to facilitate attendance. This includes arrangements for over a dozen special trains from different parts of Bengal.
Politics Takes Center Stage
Though billed as “apolitical”, the event has triggered a war of words between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP, with the state’s ruling party alleging covert political messaging. Political observers note that such mega Gita recitations in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly polls could again sharpen political debate, especially with the involvement of influential religious figures often associated with Hindutva mobilisation. While organisers insist the event is centred solely on spirituality and cultural heritage and the focus is on “unity through scripture”, its scale and timing are likely to draw scrutiny.
Potential Impact on Bengal Politics
Political commentators opine that the success of ‘5 Lokkha Konthe Gita Path’ can change the political sequences in Bengal, potentially ousting the ruling party TMC and handing over power to the BJP. The event’s impact on the state’s politics remains to be seen, but it is undoubtedly going to be a significant development in the lead-up to the 2026 Assembly polls.
