Sankirtan Das | HENB | Kolkata | Dec 5, 2025:: The Calcutta High Court has refused to stay the foundation-laying ceremony of a mosque modeled after the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad’s Beldanga, scheduled for December 6. The event, organized by suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, has sparked controversy and heightened security measures in the area. The Trinamool Congress has expelled Humayun Kabir from the party’s primary membership for life, citing his ‘recent communal remarks and actions’.
Security Arrangements
The West Bengal government has been entrusted with ensuring adequate security arrangements to maintain law and order during the event. A heavy contingent of police personnel, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), has been deployed in the area, with BSF troops conducting route marches along NH-12. The central government has deployed 19 BSF companies in Murshidabad, which can be utilized if needed.
Humayun Kabir’s Reaction
Kabir welcomed the court’s decision, stating it proves his event is neither unconstitutional nor illegal. He claimed to have deployed 2,000 volunteers and 10 drones around the venue, where a dais of 150 ft in height and 80 ft in width with 400 seats for guests has been erected. Seven caterers have been booked to serve 4,000 packets of biriyani.
After expulsion from TMC, Kabir labeled CM Mamata as an agent of RSS.

The foundation stone-laying ceremony for the proposed Babri-style mosque is scheduled to take place at Beldanga, specifically in Block 1, of Murshidabad district in West Bengal. The event is expected to feature Quran recitation by two clerics from Saudi Arabia, who will recite the Holy Quran for two hours as part of the ceremony. The event will start at 12 pm at Maradighi, remotely from Chetiyani village in Beldanga.
Kabir said that “Quran recitation will be held for two hours from 12 noon here tomorrow. After which, foundation stone laying of the masjid will be done.”
The upcoming project in Beldanga, inspired by the Babri Masjid, will feature a multifaceted complex that includes a medical college and hospital, guest house, eateries, and a helipad.”
Shankaracharya’s Warning
Meanwhile, Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj of Jyotirmath (Badarikashram) criticized Kabir’s decision, saying that anyone identifying with Babar, the invader who built the Babri Masjid, would be considered an invader too. He added that while there is no objection to the construction of a masjid, naming it after Babar would invite a reaction.

TMC’s Response
The Trinamool Congress suspended Kabir over the issue, and state minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury has been sent as an observer to the district. Kabir has announced plans to launch a new political party on December 22, after formally rejecting his MLA-ship on December 17.
The TMC has faced criticism for allegedly fostering communal politics since its inception. However, a radical faction within the party, particularly among its Muslim supporters, appears to be gaining momentum, potentially beyond the control of the top leadership.
The Beldanga event has sparked mixed reactions, with some groups objecting to the construction of a mosque modeled after the Babri Masjid, which was demolished on December 6, 1992. The situation remains tense, with security forces on high alert to maintain law and order.
Political analysts apprehend communal escalation likely to increase before the Assembly election in 2026 over the Beldanga Babri Mosque row in West Bengal.
