Sankirtan Das | HENB | Kolkata | Dec 7, 2025:: A massive gathering of around 500,000 people took place at Kolkata’s historic Brigade Parade Ground on Sunday, where the Bhagavad Gita was recited in unison. The event, organized by Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad, aimed to spread the essence of Sanatan Dharma and the universal messages of the Gita.
This event comes a day after suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone for a mosque modeled after Ayodhya’s Babri Masjid in Beldanga, Murshidabad.
Almost all the sects and orders of Sanatan Hindu Dharma, viz. Gaudiya Vaishnav Samaj, Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Omkarnath Sampraday, Ramakrishna Orders, Prajapita Brahma Kumaris, ISKCON, Matua Sampradaya, Sikh Sangat, Loknath Brahmachari Mandals, Kathiya Baba Sampradaya, Satsang and others, joined hands in the programme for a grand success. Many saints and monks from neighbouring Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, Assam and even from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Andhra Pradesh had come to join the programme.
Prominent Leaders in Attendance
The event saw the presence of several prominent leaders, including West Bengal Governor Dr. CV Anand Bose, BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari, Sukanta Majumdar, and Dilip Ghosh. Dhirendra Krishna Shastri of Bageshwar Dham and Padma Bhushan Sadhvi Ritambara also attended the event. The programme was held under the presidentship of Gita Manishi Mahamandaleshwar Swami Gyananand, and VHP International President, Advocate Alok Kumar, was also present in the programme.
Speeches and Sermons: Hindu Identity and Hindu Rashtra
During the event, Dhirendra Krishna Shastri of Bageshwar Dham said, “If Hindus unite, no one can stop India from becoming a Hindu Rashtra (nation). This country belongs to Raghuvar, not Babar. Hindus must unite and hoist the saffron flag in every village. We will soon return to Bengal for a Katha. Next time, during the Katha in Bengal, we will tie up those who oppose religion.”
In his inspirational and fierce speech, Mahamandaleshwar Swami Tejasananda Giri of Bhola Giri Sampradaya gave his clarion call to take refuge in the teachings of the Gita through its power of scriptural knowledge, along with the valour of warriors, as infused in Arjuna by Bhagawan Krishna in his response to Arjuna’s mood of escapism from war.
Swami Vishwatmananda of Bharat Sevashram Sangha urged the Central Government to take proper initiative to make the Gita an essential part of the school curriculum.”
Swami Pradiptananda, popularly known as Kartik Maharaj, a prominent monk of the Bharat Sevashram Sangh, tried to downplay the political aspect of the event, saying, “This event has no big money involved, no matter how big the gathering is. This is an endeavor by a few saints who have nothing at their disposal. It’s a religious event, organized by sadhus and saints.”
Sadhvi Ritambara, in her address, said, “The echo of Hindu Rashtra should be heard from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Kutch to Sundarban. We need to unite and assert our identity as Hindus.”
West Bengal Governor C V Anand Bose narrated the influence of the Gita in his life and success.. He also expressed his hope to bring about a change in the lives of Bengal’s common people in line with the teachings of the Gita in all aspects.
The speakers in the rally aspire to a change in Bengal through a Hindu regeneration to end the repression on the majority people in Bengal by communal forces in collusion with political powers.
Mass Recitation of the Gita
The event saw the recitation of chapters 1, 9, and 18 of the Gita. The entire Brigade Ground was adorned with saffron flags for the occasion. Swami Gyananand Ji Maharaj said that the Gita recitation event in Bengal was first started in 2022 with 5,000 people attending, which has now grown to 500,000 people including a large number of saints and sages, participated in the mass recitation. The organizers claim that this event is the largest mass Gita recitation ever held in India.
Background and Significance
The event was held a day after Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir laid the foundation stone of a Babri Mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad. BJP leaders criticized the move, accusing the Trinamool government of appeasement politics.
BJP Leaders’ Reactions
BJP leaders, including Samik Bhattacharya and Suvendu Adhikari, praised the event and criticized the Trinamool government for its alleged anti-Hindu stance. Tathagata Roy, former Governor of Tripura, said that the event was a testament to the resurgence of Hinduism in Bengal.
Humayun Kabir’s Announcement
In response to the Gita recitation event, Humayun Kabir announced plans to organize a Quran recitation event in February with 1 lakh participants in Murshidabad. Kabir stated that the construction of the Babri Masjid would begin after the Quran recitation event. He also claimed that the project was not meant to oppose the Ram Mandir and that Muslims have every right to build a mosque in Bengal.
Trinamool Congress’s Stance
The Trinamool Congress has distanced itself from Kabir’s move, with spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stating that individuals have the right to build places of worship on their own land. Kabir has been suspended from the party for his plan to build a replica of the demolished Babri Masjid.
