Not Only Mithun Sarkar, Hindus in Bangladesh Are Drowning in a Death Peril.

Bangladesh Turning into a Killing Field for Hindus: Minority Man Dies Drowning While Fleeing Islamic Mob as Attacks Surge.

Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | Jan 7, 2026:: The killing of Hindus by various perpetrations by Jihadi mobs remains unabated in these days of political and social crisis in Bangladesh. The avalanche of killing, abduction, ransom, arson, eviction, intimidation, rape, conversion, threats—everything against minority Hindus in Bangladesh—has shocked the world with unexplainable pain

Bangladesh is witnessing a disturbing surge in violence against its Hindu minority, with a series of killings, mob attacks and targeted assaults unfolding amid deep political and social instability. The latest incident involves the death of a 25-year-old Hindu man who drowned after jumping into a canal while fleeing a mob, heightening fears among minority communities already reeling from weeks of brutal attacks.

According to police, the victim, Mithun Sarkar, a resident of Bhandarpur village, died on Tuesday after leaping into a canal to escape a group chasing him on suspicion of theft. His body was later recovered by police in the afternoon. An NDTV report cited officials confirming the recovery, though the circumstances surrounding the mob chase have raised serious concerns over vigilantism and communal targeting.

Minority rights observers say Sarkar’s death is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of violence against Hindus that has intensified during Bangladesh’s ongoing political crisis.

Series of Killings Fuels Growing Alarm

Sarkar’s death adds to a string of deadly attacks reported across the country in recent days. On Monday, a Hindu businessman—who also served as the acting editor of a local newspaper—was shot dead in the head by unidentified assailants in Jessore district. The same day, a 40-year-old Hindu grocery shop owner was killed with a sharp weapon in Narsingdi city, according to local media reports.

Earlier this month, on January 3, Khokon Chandra Das (50) was brutally assaulted and set on fire near Keurbhanga Bazar in the Damudya area of Shariatpur district. He later succumbed to his injuries, triggering outrage and fear within the Hindu community.

Rights groups say these killings reflect a broader campaign of intimidation involving lynching, arson, abduction, extortion, forced displacement, rape, religious conversion and death threats, all disproportionately affecting minority Hindus.

December Marked by Lynchings and Mob Violence

The violence escalated sharply in December, a month marked by particularly brutal mob attacks. On December 24, Amrit Mondal was lynched in Pangsha Upazila of Rajbari town over allegations of extortion. Just days earlier, on December 18, Dipu Chandra Das (25) was beaten to death by a mob in Mymensingh city over alleged blasphemy. His body was later set on fire in what rights activists described as a chilling display of communal hatred.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Council for Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian Unity said it recorded at least 51 targeted incidents in December alone, including 10 murders. The council documented cases of arson, rape, vandalism and looting, warning that the violence appears aimed at terrorising minority communities ahead of the upcoming national elections.

“Bangladesh has endured political turbulence before, but the current moment is marked by a dangerous combination of institutional fragility and rising communal anxiety,” the council said.

Political Uncertainty and Minority Insecurity

The spike in attacks comes as Bangladesh prepares for its first parliamentary elections since the mass uprising of 2024, which led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. Polling is scheduled for February 12, and observers fear the volatile political environment has emboldened extremist elements.

Several minority groups and critics allege that under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, radical Islamist and fundamentalist groups have gained influence, creating an atmosphere of impunity for attacks on Hindus. The interim administration, however, has denied allegations of bias and maintains that law enforcement agencies are working to restore order.

For Bangladesh’s Hindu population—already reduced significantly over decades due to persecution and migration—the recent wave of violence has deepened a sense of existential insecurity.

As fear spreads across villages and towns, minority leaders are calling for urgent intervention, accountability for perpetrators, and concrete guarantees of safety before the country heads to the polls. Whether the state can stem the violence and restore confidence among its minorities remains an open and pressing question.

Believed to be the escalation of attacks and mob lynchings on Hindus in Bangladesh as a post-effect of the assassination of Osman Hadi, a close aide of the Interim Yunus government, by suspected Indian operatives, finally reached a conclusion when the Bangladesh police and detective agencies determined that Hadi was killed by his political rivals—reportedly Muslims—who had plotted the plan in Singapore. However, suspecting an Indian hand behind Hadi’s death, Islamist mobs perpetrated mayhem against minority Hindus in Bangladesh.

However, Bangladesh has been turned into a killing field for Hindus under the regime of the interim Yunus government, controlled by radical Islamists and fundamental Jamatis.
