Yamunanagar Woman Alleges Forced Conversion, Abuse; Seeks Return to Hinduism, Police Launch Probe Amid Growing ‘Love Jihad’ Tangle.

“I want to return to Hinduism and take a dip in the Ganges in Haridwar” – The poignant story of a woman forcibly converted to Islam and subjected to abuse.

Upendra Bharti | HENB | Yamunanagar | Jan 26, 2026:: A deeply distressing case has emerged from Yamunanagar (Haryana), where a woman who recently attempted suicide has alleged that she was deceived into a relationship, forcibly converted to Islam, and subjected to physical, mental, and religious abuse. The woman, identified as Rekha, has stated that she now wishes to return to Hinduism and plans to travel to Haridwar to take a ritual dip in the Ganges and visit temples as part of her return to her faith.

Acting on her complaint, the Yamunanagar City Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against her husband, Furqan, and her brother-in-law. An investigation is currently underway into the allegations, police officials confirmed on Sunday.

Allegations of Deception and Forced Conversion

According to Rekha’s statement to the police, she is originally from Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh. Following her divorce, she moved to Sector-17 in Yamunanagar, where she was living independently and working in an office. During this period, she came into contact with Furqan, a resident of Arayan village in Yamunanagar.

Rekha alleged that in 2020, Furqan introduced himself as “Ajay” and gradually developed a relationship with her over nearly six months. She claimed that once she had developed trust in him, he took her to Deoband in Saharanpur district, where she was allegedly pressured to convert to Islam by reciting the Kalma (Islamic declaration of faith).

She further alleged that following the conversion, she was married there, her name was changed from Rekha to Rubina, and the same change was made in her Aadhaar card and other official documents without her free consent.

Claims of Religious and Mental Abuse

In her complaint, Rekha stated that after the marriage, she was forced to wear a burqa and was discouraged from participating in Hindu religious practices. She claimed that activities she earlier followed freely—such as visiting temples and attending religious gatherings—were completely stopped.

She also alleged that her husband repeatedly questioned and insulted Hindu deities, burned idols and religious pictures, and disposed of their ashes in a toilet, acts she described as deeply humiliating and traumatic.

Financial Exploitation Alleged

Rekha further claimed that a sum of Rs 3.42 lakh, which she had received as part of her divorce settlement, was taken by Furqan. She alleged that he used this money to start a tile manufacturing business in the Sadhaura area. According to her, Furqan was unemployed prior to this and the business was set up using her funds without her consent.

She also alleged that even after their marriage, Furqan remained in contact with several other Hindu women, speaking to them privately over the phone.

Police Probe and ‘Love Jihad’ Allegations

Confirming the developments, Sumit Kamboj, Investigating Officer at Yamunanagar City Police Station, said that an FIR has been registered on the basis of the woman’s complaint against her husband and brother-in-law. “The matter is under investigation, and all allegations mentioned in the complaint are being examined,” he said.

The complaint also includes allegations that Furqan may be involved in a wider network that traps Hindu women, converts them to Islam, and forces them into exploitative situations. Police officials said this aspect is also being looked into as part of the investigation, though no conclusions have been drawn so far.

Woman Expresses Desire to Reclaim Her Faith

After being rescued and receiving medical attention following her suicide attempt, Rekha told the authorities that she wishes to return to Hinduism. She expressed her intention to go to Haridwar, take a holy dip in the Ganges, and visit temples, describing it as a step towards reclaiming her identity and faith.

Police have said that appropriate legal and protective measures will be taken as the investigation progresses. The case has once again brought to the fore sensitive issues surrounding personal relationships, religious freedom, consent, and allegations of coercion, which are now subject to legal scrutiny.
