Siddharth Karanth | HENB | Belagavi | Feb 6, 2026:: In a shocking case of digital extortion, police in Karnataka’s Belagavi district have arrested three Muslim men posing as journalists for allegedly planting hidden cameras in a Hindu woman’s residence and demanding Rs 50 lakh to keep her private moments secret.
The accused, identified as Sameer Nisar Ahmed Sheikh, Abdul Rashid Makandar, and Mohammed Balekundri, allegedly hid miniature cameras in bulb holders and other household fittings to capture the woman’s private moments. They then approached her, posing as journalists, and threatened to leak the videos online unless she paid the ransom.
The Hindu woman, distressed by the repeated calls and intimidation, lodged a complaint with the Police Commissioner, leading to the arrest of the three men.
During the arrests, authorities recovered significant digital and physical evidence, including six hidden cameras, multiple smartphones, several memory cards and pen drives with high storage capacity, OTG devices, and an Innova Crysta vehicle allegedly used during the operation. Officials noted that the scale of the equipment suggests a well-planned surveillance and extortion attempt.
Investigators are also examining whether the accused used deceptive methods, such as offering household electrical inspections or efficiency improvements, to gain access to private homes. Police are probing potential links to similar complaints and are working to identify whether additional victims or accomplices may be involved.
Officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that forensic analysis of seized digital devices will be crucial in determining the full extent of the crime, including the duration of surveillance and any distribution of illicit material.
The police have urged citizens to remain vigilant, verify the identity of individuals claiming professional credentials, and immediately report suspicious activities. Authorities reiterated that such crimes are treated with utmost seriousness, especially when they involve privacy violations and coercion.
According to sources, the culprits would target Hindu women, often using handsome male agents to gain their trust and create opportunities for blackmail. The investigation is ongoing to identify other associates and determine the extent of the surveillance.
The case has raised concerns about the safety and security of individuals, particularly women, and highlights the need for vigilance against such digital extortion tactics.
