Ravi Pal | HENB | Balaghat| Feb 6, 2026:: At least ten Muslim families in Ghoti-Nandora, a Hindu-majority village in the Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, are allegedly facing a social and economic boycott following a resolution adopted at a gram sabha meeting earlier this year. The boycott has reportedly restricted the families’ access to basic services and livelihoods, raising concerns about social exclusion and constitutional rights.
According to a report by Mooknayak, a decision was taken during a village mahasabha in January directing Hindu residents not to engage in any commercial or personal interactions with the Muslim families. The restrictions reportedly include the sale and purchase of food and grocery items, availing barber services, and other routine economic activities essential for daily life.
Sources claim that tensions began after disputes emerged between the Muslim families—around 100 individuals in total—and local Hindu residents. The disagreements reportedly involved allegations related to the construction of a new mosque with loudspeakers, initiatives connected to cow slaughter during religious festivals under halal practices, and alleged incidents of teasing Hindu teenage girls. These issues reportedly became major points of contention, ultimately leading to the gram sabha resolution. Critics, however, argue that the decision has widened communal divisions in the village.
Following the enforcement of the boycott, several members of the affected families have reportedly lost their means of livelihood. Asif Hussain, a school bus driver, has allegedly been left without employment, while electrician Sadiq Hussain has reportedly been out of work for over a week. The families claim that the economic disruption is a deliberate attempt to pressure them into leaving the village.
Women and children are said to be among the worst affected. According to family members, mothers are living in constant fear, while children are hesitant to attend school due to concerns about harassment or discrimination from classmates and, in some cases, teachers.
The incident has drawn political attention. Kishore Samrite, a former Independent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), has condemned the boycott and urged the Union Home Ministry to initiate an inquiry. Describing the situation as a serious violation of constitutional rights, Samrite accused the village sarpanch, secretary, and certain district-level representatives of contributing to a communal atmosphere.
“This social exclusion is illegal and undermines the fundamental principles of equality, freedom, and dignity guaranteed by our Constitution,” Samrite said in his statement.
On the other hand, some villagers have defended the resolution, stating that it reflects a collective effort to protect the social and cultural fabric of a Hindu-majority village. They argue that the boycott was imposed in response to perceived threats and has emerged as a unified stand by the community. However, observers warn that such actions risk normalizing collective punishment and could deepen social discord.
The situation remains tense, with calls growing for administrative intervention to address the allegations, restore social harmony, and ensure that constitutional safeguards are upheld.
