Upananda Brahmachari | HENB | New Delhi | Feb 7, 2026:: The release of the teaser for the upcoming Netflix film Ghooskhor Pandat has triggered widespread protests across India, escalating into a nationwide controversy involving political parties, religious organisations, social groups, and the judiciary. Several Hindu and Brahmin organisations have objected strongly to the film’s title, describing it as offensive, casteist, and an attack on the dignity of the Brahmin community.
The controversy gained momentum after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) raised objections to the film’s title, calling it “totally unacceptable.” VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal stated that the title of Ghooskhor Pandat—which translates to “corrupt priest”—amounts to an insult to what he described as one of the “most respectable segments of society.”
Bansal alleged that the title could spread hatred, disturb social harmony, and create unrest. He demanded immediate intervention by authorities, sought a public apology from the filmmakers, and warned of democratic protests if corrective action was not taken. The VHP formally urged the government to look into the matter and take strict action against those responsible.
Amid growing outrage, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stated that the government had asked Netflix to remove the teaser and other promotional material related to the film from social media platforms. However, government sources later clarified that it was Netflix’s own decision to take down the teaser and promotional content.
The issue has also reportedly reached the highest levels of state leadership. According to media reports, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has personally instructed state law enforcement agencies to register an FIR against the director, producers, and members of the film’s team, further intensifying the legal and political pressure surrounding the project.
Following the release of the teaser, demonstrations erupted in several states. In Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, members of the All India Brahmin Society and other Brahmin organisations staged large-scale protests, demanding strict action against the filmmakers.
Protesters specifically named director Neeraj Pandey, actor Manoj Bajpayee, and actor Ruchika Shekhar Kapoor, urging authorities to hold them accountable for content they claim has hurt social and religious sentiments.
Law enforcement agencies across various regions have been placed on alert, with authorities monitoring the situation closely to ensure that protests remain peaceful.
The agitation in Bhopal took on a distinctive cultural form. Large groups of dhoti-kurta clad pandits took to the streets, blowing conch shells and performing rituals and prayers. Protesters said the symbolic acts were meant to “purify the minds” of the filmmakers while firmly registering their anger.
The demonstrators demanded the immediate removal of the film from Netflix and warned that failure to do so would lead to a nationwide agitation. They also objected to what they described as objectionable dialogues in addition to the title.
In Jaipur, the Sarva Brahmin Mahasabha strongly opposed the film’s title, stating that the controversy went far beyond cinema or entertainment. According to the organisation, the title reflects a deepening caste-based mindset, which it considers unacceptable and harmful to social cohesion.
Members of the Brahmin community in multiple regions echoed similar sentiments, arguing that freedom of expression cannot be used as a justification for publicly hurting the dignity of a particular community.
The matter has now entered the legal domain. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court, challenging the title of the film. The petition seeks an immediate stay on the film’s release and strict action against Netflix.
Advocate Vineet Jindal, who filed the PIL, argued that the word used in the film’s title is malicious and defamatory. The petition alleges that certain groups deliberately choose such titles to insult Hindus and demean the general public. It further claims that the Brahmin community, which the petition notes has made significant sacrifices for the nation and religion, is being unfairly targeted.
In Madhya Pradesh, Brahmin organisations have formally demanded that an FIR be registered against the actors, producers, and directors of the film. Community representatives stated that while creative freedom is important, it does not permit the public denigration of an entire community.
Protesters allege that both the content and the title of the film have been deliberately designed to tarnish the image of the Brahmin community. With demands for FIRs, court proceedings underway, and political scrutiny increasing, the filmmakers and Netflix are expected to face mounting legal and regulatory challenges.
Amid the escalating controversy, Netflix has reportedly removed the teaser and promotional material of Ghooskhor Pandat from its platforms. Earlier speculation suggested that the film’s title might be changed. However, sources have now indicated that the film may be dropped entirely from Netflix’s slate, though no official confirmation has been issued.
The controversy has reignited a broader national debate on creative freedom, censorship, regulation of OTT platforms, and the impact of provocative content on communal harmony. Political, social, and religious organisations continue to weigh in, while authorities and courts assess the growing number of complaints.
As investigations reportedly continue and protests show no sign of abating, the future of Ghooskhor Pandat remains uncertain, making it one of the most contentious OTT releases in recent times.
As the controversy continues to intensify, calls for a boycott of Netflix including the film, ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ have gained significant traction across social media platforms. Numerous users have urged audiences to unsubscribe from the OTT platform, accusing it of promoting content that allegedly hurts Hindu religious and social sentiments. Alongside Netflix, prominent members of the film’s creative team—including Manoj Bajpayee, Neeraj Pandey, and Ruchika Shekhar Kapoor—have also come under sharp online criticism, with boycott appeals trending against them. Protesters and online activists maintain that such content reflects a pattern of insensitivity toward Hindu beliefs and have demanded accountability, apologies, and stricter regulation of digital platforms. The sustained public outrage suggests that the issue is unlikely to subside soon, further complicating the film’s prospects and intensifying pressure on Netflix and the filmmakers.
