Shivani Patel | HENB | Peterborough | March 7, 2026:: — A Hindu community in Peterborough has secured an early legal victory in its attempt to prevent the sale of its temple building to an Islamic mosque organization, marking the first stage in what could become a significant legal dispute over the future of the religious site.
The conflict centers on the New England Complex, a property owned by Peterborough City Council that currently houses the Bharat Hindu Samaj temple. The council recently voted to sell the complex as part of a broader effort to address millions of pounds in municipal debt. However, the decision has triggered strong opposition from the Hindu community that has long used the building as its place of worship.
In response to the proposed sale, the temple community initiated legal proceedings. High Court judge Mr Justice Fordham has now granted a temporary injunction, effectively pausing the sale process while the court considers arguments from both sides.
The ruling does not determine the final outcome but prevents the council from completing the transaction until the case is reviewed more thoroughly. Both the temple group and the council will now be required to submit written arguments, after which the court will decide how the dispute should proceed.
This decision represents an important early success for the Hindu community, which feared losing its temple if the sale moved forward.
The dispute follows a closed bidding process conducted by the council last month. During that process, multiple groups reportedly submitted bids to purchase the New England Complex.
Members of the Bharat Hindu Samaj were later informed that their own bid had not been successful. The council declined to reveal the identity of the winning bidder at the time, citing procedural reasons.
However, court documents reviewed by the BBC have since confirmed that the selected buyer is Khadija Mosque, another religious organization based in the city.
When approached by journalists, the council did not directly confirm the buyer’s identity, although the mosque later acknowledged in a statement that it had been named the preferred bidder.
Representatives of the Hindu temple say legal action became necessary after attempts to resolve the matter through discussion failed.
A spokesperson for the temple said the community had “no choice” but to seek the injunction. According to the spokesperson, the group had hoped the council would agree to pause the sale through negotiation, which they argued would have avoided the cost and time involved in court proceedings.
The temple also expressed frustration with the council’s handling of the process, accusing the authority of refusing to engage meaningfully in discussions.
They further claimed the council had been “acting in bad faith” during the dispute.
Despite the controversy surrounding the potential buyer, the temple representatives emphasized that their dispute is not directed toward the mosque.
“Our fight isn’t with the mosque; our fight is with the council,” the spokesperson said.
Peterborough City Council has acknowledged the legal challenge and stated it will participate fully in the court process.
A council spokesperson said:
“We are aware of the legal action being pursued and will now engage in the legal process.”
The council added that officials are continuing to liaise with all affected parties as the situation develops.
Meanwhile, a representative of Khadija Mosque said the organization would refrain from commenting on specific details due to the ongoing legal proceedings.
In a brief statement, the mosque emphasized its commitment to community cooperation and responsible engagement.
“Our focus remains on acting responsibly, supporting community cohesion, and working constructively with the council and all affected parties,” the representative said.
The temporary injunction means the sale of the New England Complex cannot proceed for now. The High Court will review written submissions from both the temple community and the city council before determining the next steps.
Depending on the court’s decision, the dispute could move toward a full judicial review or further hearings, potentially prolonging uncertainty over the future of the property.
For the time being, the Bharat Hindu Samaj temple continues to operate at the site, while the legal process unfolds.
The case has drawn attention locally because it involves competing religious interests, municipal financial pressures, and questions about transparency in public asset sales—issues that may continue to be debated as the proceedings move forward.
