Shivendra Tripathi | HENB | Dehradun | March 10, 2026:: A cloud of mystery has descended upon the revered portals of the Himalayan shrine of Kedarnath Temple after the disappearance of the Roop Chhad, a sacred silver sceptre believed by devotees to represent the divine presence of Lord Kedarnath himself. The incident has triggered widespread concern among devotees and temple authorities, prompting the BJP led Uttarakhand government to order a high-level investigation.
The Roop Chhad is traditionally kept under the custody of the Badri Kedar Temple Committee, which manages the shrines of Kedarnath and Badrinath and is responsible for safeguarding all sacred objects belonging to the temples.
The Roop Chhad holds immense religious significance in the rituals of the Kedarnath shrine. It accompanies the Chal Vigraha Doli, the ceremonial palanquin carrying the movable idol of Lord Kedarnath during religious processions and special occasions connected with the annual Char Dham Yatra.
According to ancient temple traditions, all ritualistic objects associated with the Char Dham shrines are regarded as the private property of the deity and are treated with the highest sanctity. These items are not permitted to be taken outside temple premises for any external purpose.
Temple priest Pandit Ashok Tiwari said the rules governing such sacred artefacts are strict. “Any religious symbol connected with the temple is considered to belong to the deity. Such objects must remain within temple custody and cannot be moved outside for any external use,” he said, adding that their protection is the responsibility of the temple management body.
The missing sceptre, made of silver and deeply revered by devotees, was reportedly kept in secure custody under the supervision of the Badri Kedar Temple Committee. Its sudden disappearance has raised serious concerns about the security arrangements and internal oversight within the temple administration.
Sources indicate that the incident came to light during an internal review of the temple’s sacred inventory, after which the matter was reported to authorities.
Taking serious note of the development, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a high-level probe into the disappearance of the sacred sceptre. Officials have been asked to determine how the revered object went missing and whether there was any negligence or procedural lapse on the part of the temple management.
Authorities are expected to examine the custody records, storage arrangements, and handling protocols maintained by the temple committee. The inquiry will also seek to establish accountability if lapses in security or administration are found.
The incident has sparked concern among devotees and religious figures across Uttarakhand, many of whom regard the Roop Chhad as a sacred representation of Lord Kedarnath. Calls are growing for a transparent investigation and stricter safeguards for religious artefacts belonging to the Char Dham temples.
Officials have assured that efforts are underway to trace the missing sceptre and clarify the circumstances surrounding its disappearance. The outcome of the inquiry is expected to determine whether administrative negligence or other factors led to the loss of the revered temple artefact.
